I dont know if our new DC has had any past coordinating experience. But what I saw from his LBs in Lions has me excited to see what he can put together with Saban on gameday.
He looks like a good fit for this defense. I expect Saban to handle most of the duties of calling the defensive plays, but like all the other coaches Saban has hired, he is a good teacher and should bring out the talent in our linebacking corp even more.
I dont think Saban will be an active part of the defensive play calling. But I do expect him to take a more active role in practices on the defensive side of the ball. Its what he did at LSU. But he let his coordinators call the game.
Hes a solid fit but nothing spectacular. NS will be running the show on D, which is part of the reason we couldnt attract anyone better. They worked together in college if I remember correctly.
Richard Smith will call the defense. Nick Saban doesn't hire coordinators just so he can dictate what they do. He allows his coaches to stand on their own two feet, and if they can't, he will replace them. Much like he fired Cary Gibbs at LSU and brought in Will Muschamp. Muschamp made a name for himself.
Ah good point about Muschamp- he is ultimately being groomed to be DC IMO. He held that position at LSU (I think..) and Nick really seems to love his intensity- but sadly he was too young and inexperienced at the pro level to take on the D in the NFL. So, for now he is "assistant head coach/defense", and he will be our DC of the future.
LSU fans tell us great things about his passionate coaching style- he is quite the motivator.
