Because it looks like there is going to be some competition for Vance Joseph, I decided to toss some names out of possible DC's. Feel free to add names and debate the merits of those listed. Suggest any mistakes that I made. Thanks.

Completely Available

  • Lou Anarumo- Could the team stay in house for last year’s DC? Anarumo coached up a defense that was missing Cam Wake, had weak LB’s, a terrible Jamar Taylor at CB, a declining Grimes and poor FS play.
  • Bill Davis- Well traveled coach most recently with the Eagles.
  • Leslie Frazier- Flamed out in TB as Lovie Smith took back the calls. Still has experience.
  • Vance Joseph- Rumored to be part of a package with Gase. Perhaps not the case anymore. Seems highly recommended and is a motivator. Reported he is available next Tuesday.
  • Greg Manusky- Recently fired 3-4 DC of the Colts. On the same staff with Gase in SF in ‘08.
  • Mike Pettine- Fired from Cleveland. 3-4 scheme, but had strong success in NYJ and Buffalo.
  • Jim Schwartz- Long discussed on this board. Attacking 4-3 coach with ties to Suh.
  • Lovie Smith- Would he really want to be a DC again and does his Tampa 2 still work?
  • Mike Smith- interviewed for the Fins job and supposedly did well in his interview. He is still in play for head coaching jobs. 4-3 coach.

Still Under Contract/Likely to be Available

  • Ray Horton- Fiery DC that is still in Tennessee. He coaches multiple fronts. Attacking still of defense.
  • Dick LeBeau- In Tennessee with Horton. Would the veteran coordinator want to pick up and move again. 3-4 coach.
  • Eric Mangini- Will soon be cut loose in SF. Would Gase want to take on Mangini with his ties to Tannenbaum? Smart X’s and O’s coach. Knows the division.
  • Mike Nolan- Still under contract in SD as LB coach. Has coached with Gase in prior stops. Nolan can be multiple in his fronts, but has coached up 3-4 defenses mostly.

Would Have to Pry From Current Teams

  • Teryl Austin- Would the Lions let him leave if there is a coaching change in Motown?
  • Ed Donatell- One to watch here in that there are multiple stops on the way in which Gase and Donatell coached together. Has experience as a DC multiple times with mixed success.
  • Vic Fangio- Brilliant coach that gets a ton from his players. Would the Bears be willing to let him walk and help Gase in his new role? Would Fangio want to come? 3-4 scheme.
  • Jim Haslett- Working at Penn State. Has a history of a DC in NFL.
  • Pepper Johnson- Many feel he is ready to take the next step. As he is with the JETS (Tx Junc) would a division rival let him out of his contract?
  • Raheem Morris- Former HC of the Bucs. Has primarily coached DB’s. Current in Atlanta.
  • Winston Moss- Spent a long time in GB as a LB coach. Is he ready (and would GB allow it) to be a DC?
  • Dean Pees- Has a very early history with Gase at Michigan State. Had a rough year as a DC for the Ravens. Would they let him walk?
  • Rocky Seto- Completely on the Pete Carroll Coaching Tree. DC’ed at USC. Has high recommendations from those that he has coached.
  • Steve Spagnuolo- Impending coaching change coming in NY? Is Spags part of the solution? 4-3 coach.

I wonder how likely it is, or isnt, that Gase will keep it 4-3.
Supposedly Suh is more suited for a 4-3, and we're lacking in LB's. Might as well keep it going.

On your "would have to pry" list you have pepper Johnson w/ the Bills, Pepper is with the Jets the Bills.

Does the Tampa 2 still work...only if you are strong up the middle, DT, MLB and SS. The Dolphins needs playmakers at LBs to make any defense work but especially a zone base defense like the Tampa 2.

I did want a HC with precious experience...Now im hoping for a DC with previous experience.....someone who has done it before, at a high level.

The Houston Texans have started making moves and it started with the coaching staff. The Hosuton Texans have dismissed three assistant coaches from the 2015 coaching staff at the start of the off-season. The Texans moved on from:

Defensive assistant Anthony Pleasant. Pleasant helped as the assistant defensive line coach for the past two seasons. Playing under Romeo Crennel in New England, Pleasant was a side hand for the season.

Yes but will that person tie himself to a rookie HC.. that has to be concern. I'm thinking its go to be somebody he has a connection to somehow maybe John Fox can be an asset here to help?

Hayden has shown us that there are an assload of options. I would guess that there are a few guys on that list
that have made an impression on Gase as opposing DC's. Hayden lists guys that Gase has coached with, but I would
bet that DC's that gave him fits loom larger in his mind

The benefit would be he would probably have full control over the defense with little interference from the rookie HC.

In no particular order;

Jim Schwartz
Mike Smith
Teryl Austin
Vic Fangio

on a Gase staff a well qualified DC would have free reign and the $$$ befitting his qualifications

I understand that but my thoughts are a veteran DC coach would want to go to a team he feels who has the best chance of the HC succeeding. Will see how it plays out..

One of the big seeling point of Gase was getting competent play out of that bears offense that was basically trash...

Hopefully a respected DC would be willing to do the same in Miami.

Any database with Mangini on it is corrupt.

I saw the same thing and thought "are you kidding me"...dude has been hot garbage since he left New England.

The fact that Joseph is in the same position that Coyle was, hiring him will cause mass hysteria amongst some media and many fans. The firestorm alone may be worth the risk
