So what are we looking at on the defensive line as far as starters and depth?

Roth/???
Traylor/Soliai/Evans
Holliday/Wright/Vickerson

Do we have anybody behind Roth? I like him, but I cannot say I am 100% confident in him locking down that spot this year . . . much less for the next several years.

I know Cam was looking for some special teams contributors, but I really wish we would have used one of our late picks on a 3-4 DE like that kid from Oregon.

Based on how they lined up in mini-camp, the depth chart would look like this:

LE Matt Roth, Chase Page
DT Vonnie Holliday, Rodrigue Wright, Kevin Vickerson
NT Keith Traylor, Fred Evans, Paul Soliai
OE Jason Taylor, Akbar Gbaja-Biamilla, Mkristo Bruce

If I had to guess, I would imagine that Soliai will also work into the rotation at one of the tackle spots, with Vonnie Holliday playing some LE, too. And reports from camp said that Evans and Wright looked impressive.

The other thing to consider is that the team may go to more of a pure 3-4 this year, with Holliday getting a lot of time at DE. With Spragan re-signed, it could also allow us to play the 3-4 with JT as a down lineman instead of at LB.

I hated the Roth pick. He may eventually be a solid player, but his upside is limited. Great motor, short arms and average/above average athletism.

Roth was productive last year even as a back up. IMO, it's much more important to have a "good motor." Who cares if his arms are 2 inches longer if he can't get close to the QB?

We really lost some depth on DL when we did not retain Kevin Carter.

I understand we definitely are trying to get younger up front and it was also a cost issue.

I believe in Matt Roth but KC will be missed.

i like roth he has a great motor, played much better last season, but best of all plays the game HARD on every play with ATTITUDE, i love it

yes kevin carter will definately be missed great player, a real pro. wish he was able to end his career here, the guy was a class act
