The defense gave up alot of leads last year, so is thier a defensive player in this years draft that can help put a stop to that. Either getting to the QB very quickly or making sure that certain pass doesn't make its destination.

Pass rusher opposite Wake
helps Wake, helps our secondary, and helps the defense immediately

Melvin Ingram - DE (reminds me of Justin Tuck, versitile guy)
Courtney Upshaw - DE, OLB (More of a 3-4 OLB)
Michael Brockers - DT

I think these guys make sense for us, but at 8 its a bit higher than their grades.

Chandler Jones is a guy I like in round 2.

If we are switching to a 4-3... Luke Kuechly, MLB Boston College. Reminds me of Zach Thomas. Kid had 191 tackles this year. That is NOT a typo. 191. Check this out per rotoworld:

One high-level NFL scout told CBS Sports' Rob Rang that Boston College LB Luke Kuechly "might be the safest player in the draft."
Kuechly is second in NCAA history in tackles, and did it in three years before declaring for the draft as a third-year junior. "You look at his stats and you think there is no way that he can be in on that many tackles," said the scout. "But when you watch the tape, he is. Just an incredibly instinctive player who is always around the action." The scout also described Kuechly as "a hell of a player who can be the quarterback of your defense for the next 10 years because of his leadership and preparation." Feb 19 - 3:21 PM

I would be really happy picking Melvin Ingram at the #8 spot. He's very versatile and can play in either a 3-4 or 4-3. Considering we're going to be using a hybrid 3-4 he would be a perfect fit with Wake on the other side.

Hes a great player no doubt, but we already have our signal caller on defense. His name is Karlos Dansby and we're paying him allot of money already. lol.

We currently have much more talent on defense than we do on offense. Also, the offense is just as important as the defense in terms of protecting leads - by boosting leads and keeping our D off the field. If we stop scoring, we can't expect to win. Remember the week 16 game against the Pats? The D gave up less than 20 points per game last year, and was a top-10 unit over the 2nd half of the season. We shouldn't ignore D in the draft and FA, but lack of consistent offense is this team's current problem, and really should be the focus.

We still need a MLB for our 4-3 defense, Dansby and Burnett will be OLB's in the 4-3 and right now Koa Misi is our MLB.

im wondering if a team would want to trade up if they coveted Upshaw or someone to jump in front of someone else and Ireland does it cus he has someone in round two or three in mind anyhoo. When the run on DE's goes....it could get interesting.

And almost everyone said A.Curry was the safest pick of that draft and how did that turn out?

I would love to grab the kid but every pick is a gamble!

One thing I'm certain of is that Kuechly is much safer than Curry. Curry was a physical freak at the LB position but he never has shown the instincts and playmaking ability of Kuechly. The only thing you worry about Kuechly is if he has enough athleticism to be drafted so high, he definitely has the size. There are players throughout the draft that have instincts and that fall because of athletic ability. I just think drafting a MLB at 8 isn't getting the BPA or filling a great need, but it definitely would make our LB's nice.

Somebody else said the same thing about Patrick Willis, Willis was a MUCH better prospect and was drafted 3 slots lower at 11 . . . I just don't wanna reach at a solid MLB with average to above average athleticism when we could potentially fill a greater need or get a better player.

But I would agree Kuechly is safe, safe isn't always great tho, JPP wasn't safe at all and extremely raw but you can't teach that kind of athleticism.

We need to look for a OLB/DE with quickness in the middle rounds. Someone who can line up in passing situations from the 4/3.
We had a very servicable guy David Bowens a few years ago. Someone like him could fill the need without causing a problem with the salary cap.

Agreed, and I was bangin' the draft P.Willis drum huge that year. It couldn't have been a better situation with Zach Thomas in his last couple of years. I bet Baltimore is smart enough to do so with R.Lewis!

L.Kuechly + a stud DE in FA would make our front 7 comparable to the NYG. We would have way better LB's while their Dline depth would be better.

I'd take a chance with Kuechly or Coples.

Coples could be the best defensive player in this draft and would ideally fit what Miami is trying to do. But you have to wonder what motivates this guy and why did his production fall so much this season. At this point I'd roll the dice with Coples over Kuechly . . . no guts no glory.
