Defensive Scheme

Wow...the Florida Today got an article on the front page of Finheaven. Never thought I'd see the day when that waste of ink would get something on here (makes me miss the Sun-Sentinel, lol). It's sad, too...its either that or the Orlando Sentinel for us Brevard fin-fans

Its actually a good article, though...I was surprised.

Damn what a great article. Now I'm getting really excited about this year

Great Article!
But though they have yet to take coach Nick Saban's varied system for a true test drive, veterans like Zach Thomas, Sam Madison and Jason Taylor like the instruction manual."
Great to hear that from our Veterans on defensive. I'm PUMPED just hearing that!! :rawk:

It will be interesting to see how the coverage works out. They better hope the pass rush excels because there isnt much talent left in that secondary. Hopefully Edwards wins the starting corner spot b/c Howard is useless. I see a lot of zone in the phins future, with linebackers and linemen being dropped back into coverage. They just dont have the talent anymore.
If New England can win a Superbowl with a wide out and an undrafted rookie playing corner, i think Madison and Howard can take care of buisness.

You guys are really underestimating our secondary. Since when did madison become older and older, he is still a top CB in this league and will do fine this year. QUOTE]

:roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: Hey I love Sam too, but all of us are getting older.

Always great to hear from an LSU fan who has followed Saban at LSU. Thanks for sharing. Quick question though... what would you consider Saban's defensive philosophy at LSU, would you consider him more towards the agressive side or conservative? And also... did LSU's defense focus more towards stopping the run, or preventing the pass? From the sound of it, it sounds like it would be more towards stopping the run because you said he felt very comfortable with his CB's to hold their own. Would you agree with that statement? Just curious to hear an LSU's fan's outake on Saban's defensive scheme... Thanks.

Saban's defense was agressive. The defensive line was expected to make a push into the backfield, but not necessarily go for the sacks. They were to create havoc, but fill their lanes. It was the LB's and Safeties who would do most of the blitzing. Saban's DE's were primarily big guys - ala Marcus Spears who could push, but also contain their area. Saban's defense looked better each successive year, but it takes time and experience to grasp it. That's why I expect it to be more successful in the NFL since you can keep players in the system for more than 3 to 4 years as they are stuck in college. You will really enjoy watching the defense. It is creative and agressive - similar to how someone would describe New England - but it will look different. The defensive players will have to be intelligent to make it work. It is the same defense that he ran at LSU... but I think the Dolphins will actually make it look better.

Sounds awesome. Thanks for sharing, that was great. Let us both sit back and watch Saban's success here in Miami. :cooldude:

I'm sure that the cover 2 will be there, but mostly it will be a balance between man and man/zone like what Belichick uses. Cover 2 would make sense if you're facing the Racndy Moss/Terrell Owens type of WR.

I will have to say after watching the mostly the entire 03 and 04 games at LSUSports.tv. Saban's D is so such a joy to watch because it not only confuses opposing offenses, it involves heavy blitzing, with constant different coverages. It changes up from play to play. I'll never forget after the LSU VS GA game, Green said the reason he struggled so much in that game is because, "It looked like LSU had 100 guys on the field.. :roflmao:

Kevin Carter will be Saban's Marcus Spears till he gets a younger guy. Carter to me is still a top flight player and our pass rush should be down right scary at times. Imagine sending Carter, and JT at the ends and then blitzing 2 LB's in Roth and Seau. Thats a bunch of muscle for any O-Line to handle.
