Dolphins General Manager Dennis Hickey didn’t delve too deeply into specifics during a Wednesday meeting with the media at the NFL scouting combine, but he did confirm that he recently metwith wide receiver Mike Wallace.
Hickey said he had a “good conversation” with Wallace, who ended the regular season on the bench after a reported blowup with coaches during the team’s final game of the season and has rarely seemed thrilled with his role on the team’s offense. That’s led to speculation that the Dolphins might try to move Wallace and his $9.9 million salary, something Hickey wouldn’t comment on beyond saying that everyone on the team was down at the end of a losing season.
“For all of us, as the season unfolded and late in the year, we were all frustrated about how the season ended,” Hickey said, via ESPN.com. “That’s what we’re focused on now: addressing, confronting the reality of where we’re at, and how do we get to where we want to be. That’s what we spent the last five or six weeks looking at hard and talking through and working together in a collaborative fashion to try to work through that, because the goal is to be better.”
Releasing Wallace wouldn’t free up much money under the cap and would take a player who scored 10 times off the roster. Wallace, meanwhile, would probably have a hard time finding the same salary coming off his two years with the Dolphins, so it might be in everyone’s best interests to find a way to make it work for another season.
They were all frustrated at the end of the season but decided to keep the main contributor as to why we had no post season - Phailbin.
