Am I the only one who thinks he deserves a starting spot? Every time Zach gets hurt, Pope steps in and plays great. I would feel comfortable with Zach, Crowder, and Pope as our starting LBs next year.

I think he can compete for a starting spot, but it makes me happy to know here's there to fill in if somebody goes down with an injury.

I think he'll get a chance to continue as a backup, but I don't see him cracking the starting lineup.

I say when we play a 3-4 we put

Crowder and Zach in the middle I mean its pretty well known Crowder has been brought in to replace Zach when he steps down

Pope on the outside with the other spot being either a free agent pick up or a rookie we draft

You Propably weren't sold on Zach's size either when he first started

Where is Taylor playing in this 3-4 of yours?

Defensive End, and on occasion he could drop back and play the linebacker position in certain packages

I wasnt thinking of Pope anyway i was thinking of Donnie Spragan (sp?)

You cant just stick linebackers wherever you want in the 3-4. You cant have a 6'0" 230 pound OLB in the 3-4. Those guys have to deal with blockers every single play.

Derrick Pope has a chance to become a starter I think, but it's doubtful that it happens before Zach Thomas retires. You can have a 230-235 interior linebacker in the Dolphins defense, but you cant have two.

Zach Thomas is usually protected by the DE and NT infront of him to playing 2-gap assignments, allowing him to stay clean and pursue the play wherever it may go.

The other ILB doesnt have that luxury. His DE is stunting or penetrating a specific gap, and he's got to deal with blockers much more often then Zach does.

Pope needs protection to play ILB in the 3-4. He's going to have to play the 2-gap side, and to do that, he's got to unseat Zach somehow.

Does Taylor actually play 3-4 DE?

Size isnt everything, just because you are small doesnt mean you cant do anything a larger player at your position could do, being smaller doesnt mean you arent just as strong either

anyway I wasnt thinking of pope as I said before I was thinking of Spragan playing the outside with Crowder and Thomas in the middle

alex22 sorry this is off the subject but i like your quote from jeremy bloom. I am from colorado and he is a good guy, he will stop and talk to any one. I would be happy to see him here to but i don't know where we would put him with welker.

Ya know, not tryin to slam u in anyway, but I spend 0 time worrying/thinking about who should start and who shouldnt. I dont pretend I know enough about a player or what it takes to play a position to make a determination. Football isnt like baseball in that its easy to see if a player can catch/throw/hit a ball, where in football its a 1000 times more complicated. I spend my time putting my faith in the coaches (unless ur name is Wanstedt of course) that they know what they are doing and I just root for the team to win and be competative.
