CAREY MOVES TO GUARD
Vernon Carey's fall from favor has been steady this season, and now he might get some work at guard to increase his value to the team.
Carey began the season as the team's starting left tackle, was moved to the easier right tackle spot, but last week he lost that job. Damion McIntosh now starts at left tackle, and Stockar McDougle apparently has won the right-tackle job.
Although McDougle and Carey might still share snaps at right tackle, it is clear Carey's play has not measured up to coaches' expectations.
''What we want every player to do is to take what you're teaching them to the field with consistency so he gives himself a better chance to get better,'' Saban said.
``Sometimes they go out there, and the guys are thinking about their technique. Good technique should be such a habit to you [that] it shouldn't be something you have to think about.
``You should be able to think about playing football, how the guy has lined up against you so you can apply your knowledge and experience so you take advantage of that, rather than thinking about just what you have to do.''
Saban added he is ``not disappointed in Vernon in any way.''
Of course, the coach also said he was not disappointed in Rick Spielman before the general manager was encouraged to seek other employment, nor in A.J. Feeley before the quarterback went from competing for the starting job to being a third-stringer.
