... that our defense has givern up 27 first downs off of penalties?

While a penalty to grant a first down is not EXACTLY a Turnover, it is similiar in some comparisons. And with the average NFL team converting around 1/3 of third down attempts, the defense giving 3 freebies out a game amounts to TWO gimmie drive continuations a game.

Did anyone also realize their are only 10 teams with less takeways in the entire NFL? Yup...that leaves 21 teams with the same or more takeaways. Isn't that suppose to be the stregth of our defense?

Giants Bengals
Bills Browns
Jets Houston
Dallas Panthers
Vikings Redskins

Also the Bills and Giants are the only one teams worse with winning records and they are both also at 5-4.

Of course, this isn't a "defense is our problem" post by any means. Nothing more than an observation of the kind of things that keeps our defense from being great, in lieu of remaining semi-above average( T10th in NFL for total defense).

Creating some T.O's and not giving up 3rd down penalties for first down conversions would go a long way in elevating our defense to it's talent potential.

And let's hope that, if it happens, is enough to compensate for our offensive woes.

Yes I have noticed Diehard, but I have to blame the bad turnover ratio on the offense inability to score. Remember the beginning of the season when we were scoring we had a good t/o ratio. When we are down and teams know we can't score they play very conservative i.e bills and henry, jets and martin, packers and green. When were up the apposing team has to take more chances giving us more t/o. With the penalty's I think it's also a result of being down that and the defense focusing more on the run this puts more pressure on the DB's.

I've tried to say this all along, but no one believes me. This is one of the MAJOR factors that we are losing games. No turnovers forced and I have noticed many penalties as well. The defense is lacking the big play now, just like the offense. It's a team problem that needs to be fixed, as well as discipline.

Maybe, just maybe, instead of trying to upright this train Wanny needs to break his foot off in someone's ass and get some type of motivation.

I still say they need to put Dyer in as a blocking back so we can do more ball control on offense. If we can control the clock, our defense might be more rested and make less mistakes. In one way or another, it all ties together.

You say this, but you fail to mention our defense hasn't given up more than 17 points in any of the 3 losses(2 ints for TDs in the 3 games.) Then look at two of the three defenses we have played(NY and Buff) are both near the bottom in total defense, and 17 should be enough to win. I agree with the first poster to say to go from good to great you can't give first downs by penaltys, and you have to force turn overs, but you really can't place any of the blame upon the D for this stretch. The opposing offense has been on the feild a good 10 mins longer than ours in the past 3 games. We were also losing at half time in all 3; thus, letting the opposing team play keep away, and not take chances. I think the last thing you have to think about is the mental strife our offense has caused our D. It sucks when you make a big play or 2 and force a 3 and out only to have your offense go 3 and out as well.

Here's a good article about this subject.Link.

Looks like another thing working against us today.
