Looking solely at the stats posted while giving Smith an extra year it doesn't look like much of an upgrade from Gesicki to me.
I've read posts here that expect great things from Smith, and I sure hope that holds true but what am I missing?

Is it that he is more of a "complete" TE? Why are the stats so similar?

Did the team acquire him because he can block? If so, ok then ... but some on here seem to think he's the second coming of Newsome or Winslow lol (exaggeration)

Anyway, does anyone think he will be any different than if we just kept Gesicki? I'm personally not a fan of Gesicki but because of the stat-line it made me wonder.

There is a serious labeling problem in most discussions involving 'Tight Ends'.

I say this, because there are several types of TEs, and throwing all of them together into one one-size-fits-all title is easy, but so wrong.

I say that you should start with a Google search of 'types of TEs'. There are some very fine breakdowns online... with much more detail than I'll supply here.

Gesicki was a slot-type TE... and McDs offense didn't feature that type of TE.

End of story.

Did Mike's stats improve after his move to the Pats?

Ok that really isn't fair I know.

We will see with that new group. I don't expect Newsome type production.

Yeah, Smythe fit the scheme better and didn't cost too much. MG is a decent big WR but doesn't have a full toolbox at TE. Likeable guy, but not someone I'd like my FO spending the cap on.

Smith will probably bring the best of both Smythe and MG to the table. Makes it a wee bit more difficult for defenses to defend. That wee bit more could be one to two plays a game the Fins add positive yards on, and in this NFL that could mean an additional game won.

DURHAM SMYTHE did as much as Gesicki did the past couple years. Smith was better with one of the worst QB rooms in the NFL. I would say Smith is an upgrade in several areas.

Plus, Gesicki wasn’t even great in the slot role

Gesicki was a terrible fit for the McDaniel offense. He only had success when Flores was the head coach because other than Waddle for one year, the Dolphins didn’t have any other WR’s they could count on. Gesicki was used more as a slot WR with the Dolphins than a TE because he was awful as a blocking TE.

We will just have to wait and see how Smith works out at TE for the Dolphins but his ability to get open and to actually run through tackles has shown in his career to be much better than Gesicki showed with the Dolphins.

Tua made a bad football player 11 million dollars and a franchise tag, what a joke, and what a poor evaluation by this regime.

Completely disagree on this take.

Gesicki was most effective with Ryan Fitzpatrick as QB. Gesicki and Fitz's styles meshed MUCH more than Gesicki with Tua.

Ryan was a QB who looked to take advantage of size.. Tua looks for space.
