I know no one wants to bring this up b/c of the sad circumstance with Joe's father this past week, but I wonder if anyone thinks about it like I do. Philbin was pretty much gone the entire week leading up to the game, and even said afterwards that he pretty much showed up and everything else was already taken care of.

To me that means that Lazor and Coyle both ran practice and put together their gameplans for the week without much (if any) input from Philbin. I have long suspected this was somewhat the case anyway, and I have always wondered what Joe actually does. While all the media outlets are pretending that our team "played hard for their coach" I don't really buy that. I think if anything they played harder b/c Lazor and Coyle were running the show this week. Everyone knows Joe is a decent guy, but when it comes to football this game proved even more to me, that he would be completely expendable with no negative affect whatsoever (outside of being forced to change coordinators potentially).

That was about the most preposterous combination of drivel I have ever read

Assistant coaches and coordinators should be able to fill in for the coach at this point in the season. But just because Philbin missed a couple of days of practice doesn't mean much.

No offense but it's silly to say that they played harder because Lazor and Coyle were running the show for a couple of practices.

And you're completely ignoring the fact that he was the head coach for the actual game.

It showed to me Philbin has put in place a very good practice schedule and he has always said his coordinators are free on game day to coordinate.

Ridiculous assumption.

You know nothing, Jon Snow.

I think Philbin's bald head blinded Sturgis on the field goal try. He actually cost us even more points.

No one wants to bring it up because it's a terrible point to try and make.

It's not like the asst coaches said "OK now that coach is gone, I'm gonna teach you some new stuff and really get you pumped for the game that's a few days from now." and it's suddenly made the entire team significantly better. This is just lazy thinking.

It proved to you what you wanted it to prove to you. Confirmation bias.

While I do believe that the coordinators deserve most of the credit for the performance of their respective units, I don't think it's fair to say Philbin did nothing to contribute to this win.

As head coach, his function is to set the vision for the team and to delegate responsibilities and develop coaches that develop players. This is in addition to the gameday responsibilities of a HC which includes time, player and game management, leadership and motivation.

I think what you saw on Sunday may be the culmination of his vision for this football team. Now, I do think it's fair to ask if we ever would have realized this vision if he had kept on Mike Sherman as he wanted instead of entrusting the development of this offense to a hot shot young coach like Lazor. Even with that said, I do think we need to credit Philbin for checking his ego and hiring a great candidate like Lazor.

In a "feel good" afterglow about most everything except the kicker and injuries to Miller and Thomas - is there a weekly quota of posts that some negatively predisposed posters feel they must do their part contributing to?

If you think about this logically, its the exact opposite. The players came out and gave their hearts for their coach in a time of sorrow to show how they appreciate him, not the other way around.

Failed thread, show Philbin some respect for overcoming adversity and leading his men yesterday.

Agree with most of your points except Philbin was forced to fire Sherman, it was not an ego aside move for the betterment of the team. And I don't think he provides any motivation whatsoever, but there's been a million threads about that already on here. At least we are winning for a change!
