The year the Dolphins went to the Superbowl and lost to the Redskins I believe Shula so honored David Woodley extraordinary athletic gifts that he would get Woodley out as a wide receiver and Tony Nathan or was it Nat Moore threw him at least one TD pass.

Please someone out there tell me its true and that my own delusional memory system is still moderately based in reality.

Not the "Wildcat" ...Woodley handed off to Nathan and Woodley
took off down field and caught a halfback pass.Trick play..
not the Wildcat

Against the Jets

it was the 1st game of that year...shotgun formation and yes,he handed off to Nathan then went off to his left and Nathan to his right then trew it back to Woodley...in that game we also had 2 INT's returned for TD's...1 was by Don Mcneal but I can't remember who got the other one....I believe the final score was 45-28 tho I could be wrong

Ozzy rules!!

Maybe your right that Woodley took the snap handed it off and then went out for a pass - but my memory (completely unreliable) has it that he lined up as a wide receiver and Tony Nathan took direct snaps - and I emphasize the plural in snaps!

ive been saying the wildcat really isnt anything new... I dont know what happened back with woodley because, well.. regardless of how many old dolphins games I have seen that have been taped by family members.. I wasnt born yet :p

or well, was just being born. :p

edit - actually, I think I do remember that semi... I saw the superbowl replay a long time ago.. but I do remember something with woodley

Good job, your right with every single person that has watched football in the last 20 years because no one has ever thought this was new

Now some of the things they are doing with it is different and some of the things they COULD do with it could be VERY different. Over and over i hear announcers talk about little details they are changing AND wondering outloud what new wrinkle they are going to add in the future.

But new, not even my 15 year old son thought this was new

no one? really so 0? Can we just eat your credibility now? because theres been well over a hundred people posting here ALONE saynig its new and we did something great.. blabla

Don't eat your own words, just retract what you say.. because if I just show "ONE" person saying it was new, youre beat.

Please post something from just one person saying this has never been done before, i would really appreciate it. I could see someone asking about it the first time it was run and then saying "oh yeah, I remember or- i gotcha"

But i do not believe that over the last 2 weeks someone was arguing over and over that this was new. But of course, after you prove me wrong then I would be happy to admit it :woot:

From what I remember when Woodley came up he was a straight option QB - they did some straight pitch option plays to Nathan and they seemed to always work - but Woodley always got hammered making the pitch which is why they didn't do it too often. The reason why Woodley was playing in the 1st place was Griese went down and Woodley was the only real option at QB that year (81)?? I can't remember if something was wrong with Strock too.

The option for those brave enough to try works in the NFL because teams never practice for it - but the reason why it's hardly ever used is because the QB takes a beating. The Wildcat takes that out of play because the RB is the ballcarrier.:)

ive been going off about it and right after the patriots there was alot of people saying it was new. I am not searching right now but I can easily later when I actually care to sit around for 10 minutes digging through threads.

Bilichek said he practiced against it. Quite a few teams said they practiced against it in the preseason and the week before.

Pennington hasnt taken any beating. Hes a football player.

I think he was talking about the read option or the triple option and not the Wildcat.

Nothing was wrong with Strock. Shula thought Strock was more valuable coming off the bench. Shula loved Woodley's mobility and felt it added another dimension to the offense.

Of course the Wildcat isn't anything new...the Arkansas Razorback ran it for two years under David Lee, our QBs coach. The Wildcat is also taken from the old single wing formation many NFL teams used in the 1940s and 1950s.

trust me,Nathan did NOT take a direct snap...Woodley got the snap and handed off to Tony....what's more,,,,after the play, the announcers told the story that Shula talked to the officials before the game started that day and told them"it is a legal play for a RB to get a hand off and then trow a forward pass as long as he gets the snap on a shotgun formations"...the officials told him that he was right...at that time Shula told the officials"one more thing" .."don't tell the jets"....and I am not making this up....I watched the whole game with my dad that day...rip

Ozzy rules!!
