nice article that for me put things in perspective. i get very emotional when the Fins lose, but in reality it may take time to fully evaluate this group that needs to gel. Too bad I am not a patient person though.

"Let's be realistic, the defense played well enough to win," Dierdorf said on a local radio station (WQAM). "If you hold a team to 16 points that should be a [win]. I think it was just stunning how uncomfortable Daunte Culpepper looked. When he goes back and the ball just slips out of his hand, who knew at the time that was an indication of what the rest of the day was going to look like.

"His mechanics are way off," he said. "Sitting down and talking to him before the game, he admitted it. He said, 'My footwork . . . we're constantly working on it, trying to get me back.' It's bad enough when you go a long period of time without playing. He obviously isn't all the way back yet.

His leg isn't as strong as it should be, and he's not as confident in it as he should be. Of course that affects his footwork. I think he's way off. If we saw two things that were lacking in Culpepper, it was technique and confidence."

I think this is officially rock bottom for Pep. Another thing being over looked is the fact that these are Daunte's first games in almost a year. It always take a little bit of time to knock some rust off. Nothin is better than our next 2 games as we have a couple of softies where hopefully Daunte finds his old self. Nice find and post Grt8.

Thanks for the info. That was very interesting and probably explains his overall play. Excellent post.

The QB position is as much psychological as it is physical. Far more psychological than any other position. If you are struggling with footwork and that is on your mind, and if you are rusty as far as being in the pocket, finding receivers under pressure, you don't have the speed you used to, etc., that adds to the questioning in your mind. As long as that is there, you can't play with confidence. Everything just snowballs. You don't make good reads. You force decisions.

I think patience is important - as well as hard work in getting back those fundamentals.

In my view, fundamentals are always the key to good play. That means it should be a mindless exercise to set your feet, and have all your mechanics right. Once he gets to that point without thinking about it, he'll be okay and he can focus on other matters.

Nice post.

Interesting to hear Culpepper admitted he's off to Dierdorf.

I'm tired of all the "It's all the OL" and "It's all Culpepper" posts. Clearly the entire offensive unit besides Ronnie Brown has issues at this point. No one is doing a good enough job to be exonerated from fault.

It's a little late for a team to be having problems this bad but hopefully they can get their act straight.

That's a big no no around here Mastr. Just to let you know, you should probably edit a lot of that out.

So if Culpepper even admits he's way off and his mechanics and footwork suck, why not put the better "present" QB in and let Culpepper hone his skills in practice till he's ready in week 7 ?

To me, that's a huge mistake by Saban to put in a QB who's clearly not ready to play when you have a healthy and capable guy behind him !

Right, I think everyone of us saw that. What I don't get is, why can no one (Culpepper, Saban) aknowledge that they made a mistake and learn from it. Daunte is not ready regarding every aspect. Give him time to get rhythm, confidence and leg strengh back. Right know, he doesn't help the team and himself. If Saban would say, that they made a mistake and rushed him in, there wouldn't be a problem. No one would blame him, there wouldn't be a controversy (maybe here on finheaven, but not in the locker room). Just say he is week to week, treat it like an injury that just happened (the injury was bad judgement by Culpepper and Saban).
I think every one would save his face. Saban, Culpepper, the team.

i say we start harrington, and its nothing to do with lacking support in pepp. i have full support for him, but he obviously isnt at 100% yet. plus, harrington had more first string snaps in preseason then pepp did, so he should be comfortable with the receivers. not to mention that he played exceptionally well IMO. heck, if we play the titans the way we should, it should give whichever qb starts, a boat load of confidence (no pun intended towards daunte either)

lets bring cullpepper along in practice these games are not preseason !!!!! start joey againts the titans & lets see ronnie run for 1000yards !!!! i think if we start cullpepper this week we are gonna get BEAT !!!

If that is the case, he should be on the bench!

 I don't really know where to start on this one.

very nice read. and i hate to say this but harrington should be in for now at least. if culpepper isn't at 100% and he isn't comfortable at all with his footwork, he shouldn't be playing just yet. so don't get me wrong, i still believe he can be a great qb and return to his original form if he gets back to 100%. there were a few instances in the bills game that i noticed he was throwing the ball kind of sidearm and not stepping into it at all, probably due to his lack of confidence and comfort in his knee.

If Culpepper isn't right,,let him heal till he is. He is absolutley no good until he is anyways, why risk another injury. Stupid:shakeno:
