Jamarcus Russell - 6 years - 61 million - 29 guaranteed
Mario Williams - 6 years - 54 million - 26.5 guaranteed
Alex Smith - 6 years - 49.5 million - 24 guaranteed
Eli Manning - 6 years - 45 million - 20 guaranteed

It seems that there is a pretty standard 10% increase each year. Russell made 13% more on salary but his guaranteed money was increased by 9%.

Would a different position warrant a different contract. So if we pick Chris Long, would we effectively pay him the same amount as Matt Ryan?

Even though the numbers would most likely look the same, being 31 guaranteed and around 68-67 million for either player, would Chris Long have a different structure to his contract than Matt Ryan? Would Long's contract be structured so that he is actually making a larger majority in his final two years, which we would renegotiate when the time comes? Or would an agent still demand reasonable escalators, like a normal contract?

Short answer: YES

Longer answer: The way rookies are paid these days, it is all based on slotting. While QBs usually make the most $ on a team, when it comes to the draft, your position does not dictate the money you get paid. Brady Quinn at #22 does not get more money than the safety who got picked at #21.

Right, which is genarally why you don't see the guys in the top 10 getting signed until the one before him does. I believe, I could be wrong. It's like a domino effect for the 1st round

Yeah the QB premium is alive and well.

Honestly, the guaranteed money is the only part that matters. A big salary exist only on paper.

The guaranteed money and the # of years. Players (and agents) are going to want to sign that next contract as soon as possible.
