With no head coach, an aging defense, and a big question mark at qb, the fins need a lot of help this offseason if they want to compete in the east next year, as both the jets and bills showed this year that they are moving in the right direction......whoever the fins hire to be the head coach better have a good plan in place, i would hope that we get at least one big FA, preferably on the OL and then land an impact player in the draft.... any thoughts on the direction the new coach must take...

First get rid of Daunte and his $$
Resign Cleo Lemon
Trade Joey for a 7th rounder
Trade from no.9 to mid 1st round and an extra 3rd round
trade from the mid 1st round for the 20's in the first round and a 4th round
draft draft draft draft

cut Hill, Tillman, Will Allen and Shelton

Trade Chambers for a rookie pick.
Restructure Booker
Restructure McMike

Sign a star cornerback
Sign a a few formidable lineman

then draft away

1 first rounder, 2 2nd rounder, 2 3rd rounder (from chambers trade), 2 4th rounder. ( plenty of depth would be filled with the right drafting.

Congrats on your first post, and welcome to Finheaven!!

I believe that the way to go is to hire an up and coming NFL coordinator (Chow, Cam, Whisenhunt, Rivera, etc.).
Then go after a proven talent evaluator (Pioli, or our own Muller).

I think the team doesn't look that bad, if you take into account that game planning and coaching were partly responsible for the team's poor performances. Here's what I see.

Biggest Holes:
Pass rushing LB/DE
#1 CB (we have okay #2s and 3s)
#1 WR (same as above)
LT (C also needed)

Biggest Question Marks:
QB (Joey must go)
Backup RB (Morris isn't the answer, neither is RW)
DL (Can any of the young guys with potential step up? Can we keep JT?)
Mare? Nuff Said.

Here are some quality UFAs for '07:

Tony Gonzalez, KC - TE
Mark Starks, Pit - LT
Mark Gandy, Buf - LT
Lance Briggs, Chi - LB
Adalius Thomas, Bal - LB
Nate Clements, Buf - CB
Asante Samuel, NE - CB

So how about this... we roll with what we have on the DL, working a deal with Holliday, and working Fred Evans and Kevin Vickerson into the mix (maybe Manny will even come back now that Nick is not around to make him cry). And we stand pat at S with Jason Allen and Yeremiah Bell.

We try to grab one of these CBs and LBs in Free Agency. Adalius Thomas looks like a very good fit as a pass rushing LB, with 11 sacks this year. Briggs is just a beast of a run stuffer. Flip a coin on the Corners.

Now here's the tricky part... there aren't many top-notch receivers in FA, so I would try to draft one high, maybe with the first round pick. I hate taking a WR in round 1 because it is such a crap shoot, but the only other option is to keep the same receiving corps we have now and hope someone (Hagan, Vick?) develops. You could draft a WR in later rounds, but I wouldn't see them contributing much in '07. *BUT*, what if you could lure Gonzo away from KC? I think that would automatically improve the QB position and make the current WRs better. Expensive? Undoubtedly! But I saw somewhere that we might have as much as 40M in cap space this offseason, depending on how much dead weight we can prune, and maybe we could get something for McMike.

If you can buy Tony, draft an LT in the first round, unless Brady Quinn somehow slips to within reach, but that ain't gonna happen. Let Mueller work his magic with drafting a development QB in a later round, and plan on going to camp with DC, Cleo, and Marcus Vick (people are concerned about his height, but he is a little bigger than Drew Brees).

If you can't buy Tony, buy one of the above LTs and draft a WR first or second, depending on value. Draft a Center in round 3 or 4, depending on value available. This position will probably take some time to develop. Rex is okay, but I think his best position is Guard and McKinney just isn't that great. Whichever round you don't use for a C, use for a DE/LB. Finally draft another RB and a developmental QB. We need depth and Ricky is never going to be reliable. It kills me how many good RBs went in later rounds this season, and we missed out.

Now I know everything will most likely not click in 1 year, but this would create a solid basis for building an Offense next year, upgrading and getting younger on Defense, and heading to camp with options. If we can get some good game planning and coaching, we would be competitve next year with these upgrades and in good position the following year to fill any remaining needs heading into the draft.

Someone else commented trading down, maybe our 1 and 2 for two lower firsts may be able to get us the LT and WR, or LT and DE/LB positions filled and I think that has merit as well.

I think that this "aging defense" cliche is "overexaggerated and overblown"...

we have a good mix of vets and youngeons....

our whole secondary is young...and Pope, Crowder, Roth, Wright Bros, Evans, and Vickerson compliment JT, ZT, and VH...in the front seven.

All we need to do is cut Carter and re-sign Holiday and use a minimal amount to re-sign Traylor and Bowens....then sign Adalius Thomas to play OLB and draft a NT in the 1st or 2nd round.

We can move J.Allen to CB, unless we ignore Adalius Thomas. If we sign Nate Clements we can draft an OLB in the 1st round...if we sign Adalius Thomas, we go S in the 1st round.

On Offense we can sign Eric Steinbach to play LG and either trade a 3rd rounder and Booker for Randy Moss or draft Tedd Ginn Jr at #9. I see Shelton moving back to starting LT, Toledo moving to RG, and drafting an OT in the 4th round to groom.

We can also always trade chambers to the NE for one of there 1st rounders...and draft a S/OLB at #9, draft a NT with NE's pick, and a LT or QB in the 2nd round...

as far as coach? Cameron for HC, Hudson Houck promoted to OC, and Dom Capers gets full control of the "D".

Not so hard, trust me...

Mueller needs to sign the practice squad now. Since he's been there this year develop plan to have the existing staff provide evaluations of each player.

Reveiw their own free agents and prioritize in sequence of talent and cap money.

Review the known UFA and RFA form all the teams. Rank the same.

As a a staff rank needs. Ranking biggest impact to smallest.

As far as whot to trade and let go let the new coach studdy film, talk with Mueller (hope he stays on as a full GM) and staff he gets. My list would be:
Trade Chambers to someone not in the AFC East
Resturcture Mare, Harrington, JT, ZT
Release Zogonia, Trayler, Carter or Holiday
Promote the young talent on the team - especially on defense
Needs: LT, #1 WR, DE/OLB, CB, Backup RB, ILB, Safety, QB (draft)
Hold off the QB decision until right before FA. Need to see where DC is (if he is not going to recovery, let him go. Otherwise, keep the existing QBs and let QB camp rank them, and TC to work with the team.

what we really need to do is have the GM do the GM job while the coach handles coaching. no more of letting the coach handle everything.

You guys have it all wrong, sort of. We need to get a true GM like Mueller. Under Saban, he was handcuffed. I say let him be GM and select the players and handle the draft. He has a pretty good record.

Also, if we do have a GM, then we will need to get a coach who doesn't want total control. Anybody no if Cowher has total control?

Why are the posts underlined ?

NE is probably the only team that can give us a late 1st rounder for Chambers...he aint going anywhere though...

then, JH is a goner...trust you me...

you cant release players that are not under contract...Zgonina, Traylor, and Holiday are not under contract...

I think the need for a LT is over-rated, personally. Believe it or not, once McIntosh returned to LT, he did not play all that badly this year. He was certainly better than he was last season. I honestly think that LG and C are bigger needs than LT right now. If we keep Shelton at RG and Carey at RT, we're set on the right side of the line. Get a better center and a better LG and we'd be in decent shape, IMO.
