i initially liked the projection of Jason Allen being picked at #16, but not considering who fell. The fact that a DB was selected even though many were aquired in FA leads me to believe all of the DBs aquired in FA aren't players that are going to come in and make any kind of impact. The fact that Winston Justice slid this far, amazed me. But what amazed me even more is that a team w/ a less than average OL didn't select him. Now I know I will take alot of crap for this, but OL and esp. OT is a position we need to upgrade, and the fact that the 2nd best guy at that position in the draft slipped to us amazes me we didn't take him. Not only would this have filled a much needed upgrade, but at this point it was also been a value pick. Would have liked to see more protection for our 2nd year back and QB coming off major surgery. With all of this being said I like Saban, and truly feel he knows what he is doing. I do not doubt that Allen will help our team a great deal, just don't know if it was the right pick. Also, Chad Jackson might have been nice at this pick to give Daunte another target, and open up the run game for Ronnie a little more.

Vic Carucci's Analysis
Allen gives the Dolphins a solid cornerback with impressive coverage skills. Nick Saban needed to fill that hole in his defense. And he needs good, lock-down corners to play the aggressive scheme he wants to play.

Gil Brandt: I don't think this is a reach. People were concerned about his hip, but otherwise he's a top-10 pick. I think they got great value. Saban tried to recruit him out of high school when he was the coach at LSU.

Pat Kirwan: A very talented guy. When he ran well before the scouts, it became clear his hip was OK. One of the three safeties in this draft who can play corner. He's fast and versatile, he can handle all kinds of matchup problems.

Allen was a top 10 pick without the injury. Saban said they rated a few defensive players higher then Justice and that "Carey progressed very nicely last year".

Justice is still available. What does that tell you ;p

history repeats itself. channing crowder was knocked for his injury last year and we got him for good value. same with allen. this guy is gonna be our polamalu. except at either FS or corner.

It tells me nothing Marino was still available late also. I never said anything bad about Allen, I'm not questioning him or his talent. I'm questioning our needs.

Pete Prisco gave our pick a B:
Nick Saban likes picking players from the SEC. This is the second year in a row he's used a first-round pick on an SEC player after taking Ronnie Brown last year. Allen had some medical issues with a hip that forced him out last year, but when he's healthy he is a safety who can run. Those guys are valuable.
Fox Sports take:
CZAR'S FRONT OFFICE TAKE: I called this one during the week and Miami head coach Nick Saban got the safety (Jason Allen) that he wanted to play the deep middle. Allen, like Huff, has the quickness to play cornerback in a nickel scheme, but he's a free safety. Miami needs someone to deal with Tom Brady, who loves to throw down the deep middle. Allen is a very physical player who put to fears his hip injury with a 4.39 40-yard dash at the Indy combine. You have to love the pick because Saban recruited this kid for LSU, played against him in the SEC, plus he coaches the position. It's surprising to some that Jimmy Williams and Antonio Cromartie are still available.
SCHRAGER ON THE SCENE: I love the Jason Allen pick. But the Dolphin fans, here, do not. They openly boo the pick. Curious, I head on over to their section and ask which player they did want. In unison, they respond: "Sinorice Moss." Shocking.
I think we made a pretty good pick.

And we don't need a talented DB?

thats a good way to look at it. Im starting to gain more confidence in this guy. There were other great players like justice, jackson, and lawson still there, but you cant say we didnt fill a need position.

didn't matter who saban took at 16 there are people who would be saying we should of taken someone else on the board. Fact of the matter is our secondary was our biggest problem. Yeah our receivers have a depth issue but Pepp can turn any receiver into a good receiver.

Our oline progressed nicely last year and Houck is all about turning a line of nobodys into a wrecking crew.

our dline is aging but we have some young guys who should step up. Bottom line we needed an upgrade big time in the secondary and Allen is a great pick to be an impact player next season.

Great pick saban, filled our most pressing need

with Houck coaching the OL we are deep at OT with Carey Pearson Mcintosh SHelton all competing for a starting position'

as far as Jackson the guy sux'd at Florida he's nothing more than a position reciever who has a hard time getting open.
just cuz he ran a 4.3 doesnt mean hell be a good WR in the NFL.
Gator WR have a history of suxing on the next level

This was a great pick and in 3 years y'all will be very happy about this.

I'm a die hard U fan, but if we picked Moss, who I love, I think I'd have to slit my wrists!

Funny, a lot of teams are bypassing him. Shouldn't that be a red flag to you. In fact the guard from Oklahoma was taken ahead of him. BTW the O-line is not nearly as bad as you claim it to be. Safety was our biggest need and depth on the Diline and LB was second. WR is NOT a need on this team and would have been a luxury. In addition, none of the top 2 WR's is considered elite by any measure. This is a very weak yr for WR's.
If Allen is anywhere near as good as Dale Carter was then we are in good shape. I remember when Terrell Buckley and Troy Vincent were the 2 highly touted DB's in the draft, yet it was Dale Carter taken in the middle of the 1st rd who was the better player.
