Barely past halfway through the season, this is almost certainly irrelevant to how the division race actually goes, but what the hell:

At the moment, only the Jets or Dolphins can guarantee themselves the AFC East title by winning all their remaining games. Either the Bills and Pats could win out and still lose the division.

Actually, I think the Jets are the only team that control their destiny to winning the division. We have to beat the Raiders tomorrow to be in 2nd place ahead of NE who would have the same record.

............and back to my point about taking it one game at a time

No. If we won the rest of our games, it would include beating the Jets in the final game. Miami then wins the division tiebreak (assuming the Jets won all games except the last one).

It's way to soon to worry about any of this; I just thought it was a fun detail to know that the Patriots -- technically speaking -- "need help" to win the division.

yup I have been saying this very same thing for the last couple of days. We are very much in control of our own destiny and it really dosnt matter if the Jets win or lose next sunday. The only thing that matters is that we keep winning. If the Jets drop a game we have to keep winning division game match ups. It would be helpfull to us if the Bills could pull off an upset on the Jets. That game is the biggest one their schedule for them to lose that would benefit us the most. The least damaging game for us to lose if we drop are to drop any is the rams game because they are out of confrence. We could lose first place to the Jets but still find ourselves a wild card spot if we should lose to the rams.

if we win out? wouldnt we get a first round bye?

If we win out I think they have the winner of the afc east projected to take the 3rd seed spot but its really too hard to predict seeds this early on.
