Here are three negatives that could work against Miami:
  • Miami is tight on the salary cap. The team currently is projected to be over the estimated cap for 2016 and has a lot of tough decisions to provide some breathing room. Important starters such as defensive end Cameron Wake ($8.4 million), cornerback Brent Grimes ($8.025 million), tight end Jordan Cameron ($7.5 million) and linebacker Koa Misi ($4.3 million) are among those with high salaries, and not everyone can be retained. The Dolphins already have a lot of holes on their roster, and losing any of these players would create even more needs. Also, don’t expect them to be major players in free agency. In fact, they will have a rough time keeping their own in-house free agents such as defensive end Olivier Vernon and running back Lamar Miller. Make no mistake, each coaching candidate will take a hard look at this roster as it is currently put together.
  • Is quarterback Ryan Tannehill the answer? The answer has been “no” after four seasons, zero playoff appearances and a 28-35 record as a starter. But the Dolphins are committed to Tannehill to the tune of $96 million. Financially, it appears he will be under center for the next year or two in Miami. That could scare some coaching prospects away who do not believe Tannehill is worth hinging their future on, especially compared to other openings where you have better options at quarterback such as Andrew Luck (Indianapolis), Matthew Stafford (Detroit) and potentially Marcus Mariota (Tennessee). Tannehill will be 28 next July. Therefore, it’s time to stop using the word potential.
  • It’s been proven the Dolphins lack leadership. Over the past three seasons, the team had a high-profile bullying scandal within their locker room (2013) and back-to-back late-season collapses (2013 and 2014). This year, the team fell apart and underachieved from the start under former head coach Joe Philbin and failed to respond to the coaching change under Campbell. It will be up to the new coach to establish a firm direction, but he can’t create leaders from his locker room. Tannehill and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh are highly-paid players but not vocal leaders.
Of course, things are not all bad. South Florida is a great destination and owner Stephen Ross is willing to spend top dollar to turn the Dolphins into a winner. They also have the No. 6 overall pick in the draft if the season ended today. Those factors work in the team's favor.

lol,

Sorry but as of right now, considering what I've seen from Luck and Stafford this year, Tannehill is a safer post to tie your boat to than either of those 2 at the moment...

Plus lets not act like the expectation is going to be extremely high for this team next year. We have a tough schedule and more holes than one solid draft could fill

Yes because this team doesn't need to be blown up. If it's an entire rebuild, then no, that always sucks. But this team is not an entire rebuild. Get a smart, proven offensive coach, cut some fat, draft properly, and that's it. I literally think it's that simple. Knowing the division is also key. Just split the ****ing division, that's all I ask. No more of this swept ****ery.

How do you think today's fiasco with the Grimes press conference is going to play on our ability to be an attractive job?

Salary caps can always be manipulated

Luck is the obvious choice, It's been 6 years you know what you are getting with Stafford , Mariota showed promise, other than Luck none are jumping out at me.

Coach should be able to instill leadership

Article fails to address the real problem, owner and front office dysfunction. No surprise from Walker, he is clueless most of the time and is out touch with the team despite hanging out in their front yard all year long.

Thats the number one thing hurting a hire

Agree. Going .500 in the division is key.

Jimmy J once said, "...going from 1-15 to 8-8 is easy. The trick is getting to where you win 12 consistently." Its not going to take a demolition expert & team of engineers to fix this team but a strategist w/ a good plan.

No matter the amount of a circus a team has going on as a whole or with certain players, there will always be a coach with the ego of they can right the ship... rather they actually can or not is debatable. It's a iffy situation in current state of social media outlets for players, media pulling at strings to get answers/antics that shouldn't be said, etc.. so a coach will have to be somebody that accepts this isn't the old era of football anymore, so somebody with a Saban outlook will not work in any shape or form. The more I look at how Miami has been, what they lack, now their antics, Doug Marrone is looking more and more appealing as HC choice.

Interesting comments! I like Marrone and have him on my wish list.

the anti-coordinator sentiment is due to the failure of the top dogs to find the right guy

I don't really want to think that we are doomed to failure because the right guy doesn't want the job

conflating "picking the wrong guy" with "coordinators suck" rings hollow with me. it feels like Philbin and Cameron were boats raised by
the tides of their situation and yet there are coaches who were actually the agents of success and our ****ing organization couldn't find them
to save their lives.

I fear that come 2017 there will be 1 or 2 successful HC's who would have had no business turning down this job, and yet we didn't find them and in 2015/16
our fear was that nobody good would want the job. my fear is that we don't know how to hire a winner and not that nobody wants the job

HC interview- "Will you be ok with Ryan as your starting qb?"

"No."

"Thank you for coming in today...Next!"

"But maybe we can trade for Fitz or Derek Carr!!!"

"Good day sir! Security!"

The raiders wouldn't trade Carr for Tannehill I can assure you that

Yes but we have to remember you are a HUGE Tannehill fan. Probably the biggest in the world honestly. Believe it or not bro what he wrote is how the huge majority of people look at this situation. I hope you're right but for you to rather "tie your boat" to Tannehill over Luck.... I mean.....that says it all

Yeah he based that on one bad year out of 4 from Luck. Basically he's saying he'd get rid of Luck for having one bad year but keep Tannehill after 4 Mediocre seasons lol
