With the prospect of Donald Thomas, a standout rookie obviously, and Justin Smiley returning to the starting line up next year, do we honestly have a large need to go after guards/center in next years draft?
Explanation: Next year we have Thomas and Smiley back, and their backups would be Ndukwe and Alleman. With this kind of depth i don't see, IMO, where this is a pressing need. We also have Satele (i am thinking he has shown less than disirable competence at center this season) Al Johnson (possible center if he is over injury issues) and a couple of other guys at this position. If i had to guess, i would say Sparano and Ireland will go after linemen only if they are seen as a great value at their respective draft position. What do you guys think about the future of our line?

ps- this post assumes we will lock up Carey and of course we have Long for a while. Ok let me have it!

We don't know for sure what we will get from Donald Thomas. He may be the answer, but he hasn't proven anything. We now know that Alleman and Ndukwe can't cut it if they have to start, so we should go after quality depth anyway. I am a firm believer that a Good OL = Good Offense and a Great OL = Great Offense. Until we have a perfect OL I don't think there is any reason not to address it in the draft and free agency.

our interior line sucks. Parcels will address that via free agency and/or within the first 3 picks of the draft.

No way we go for a lineman in the first three picks IMHO. I do agree that was the weak link this season and it obviously was during the Ravens game. After some thought i am betting we jettison some of these guys. Johnson could be gone although we don't know what we have in him just yet, Alleman i could see being released. Not knowing what we have in Donald Thomas really hurts us. But these guys must have seen "it" in him when he earned the starting spot as a rookie. Lets hope "it" was contagious and Shawn Murphy caught it during this season. Merky would be a good description of our o-line outlook.

wouldn't be surprised if we take the center from oregon with either of our first 2 draft picks....the kid is real good and he would be our starting center for the next decade

I'd be shocked if don't draft an Olineman with one of our three picks, if we don't sign VC I bet we'll draft two Olineman with our first three picks. A.Mack please!!!!

Simply put, YES! Even if Thomas and Smiley do work out do we really want to see Alleman or Ndukwe again? Also I hate to say it but Sampson sucked it up this year. We have 2 good/great power backs and we had to run to the outside because and the wildcat to try and get running room. Our best run up the middle was with 3 backs and Polite getting the ball so we could pick up a inch.

There's no use of elite WR,s a Top QB, or PB running backs, if our QB gets hit on every 3rd pass play, or our running backs, hit our own OL guys, because they are unable to open holes. Tuna is shurely going to fix the OL, maybe not with the first, but the 2a or 2b pick. ( I'm assuming that we wether sign Gross, or keep Carey) than all we need is a C, and we move Satele to Guard... that shall raise enough competition for the G spots, to get out the max performance of everyone.
we still need OLB, and BD-s too..

can't wait for the senior bowl, and combine, and all this stuff :)

You saw what happens when the Ravens were bringing the blitz. I think Alleman and Ndukwe would be good for depth and I hope D. Thomas lives up to the hype. Then you have to realize that Smiley and Thomas are coming off of injuries so if they play well IMO the center from Oregon would be a great pick in the 2nd round and I think we take a guard in the later rounds. You also have to account for injuries next year. All it takes is a few big guys to fall on someones leg and then they are gone. You can't have too much depth on the line.

Yes, we REALLY do need more OL. Thomas and Smiley are coming off injuries, and Smiley's injury histroy is especially troubling. Can you really depend on him? This team isn't going anywhere until they get a serious upgrade in the trenches.

What he said.

We're fine at Guard. Smiley, Thomas, I liked Alleman. And Satele needs to be put at OG. We have no Center though. Satele is not a center in this league.

Ok i am convinced......maybe one of our first three picks goes to a stout lineman. This is the first i've heard of the Oregon guy, thanks for the heads up and i'll look into him.
