If it means taking a step back while a rookie QB takes his lumps so we can make a run the following year or starting Ferrotte and making the playoffs this year and losing in the first or second round. Which would you pick, me personally I'm ready to start grooming a Franchise QB even if it means not making the playoffs this year. Hopefully we would make the playoffs anyway but normally a rookie has to take his lumps.

It's not just about having a rookie take his lumps. Sometimes (a lot of the time) it's better for a rook QB to sit for a while to adjust to the speed of the game, spend time in the weight room, fix mechanics and footwork, etc. It's different for everyone. I think the only QB in the draft that wouldn't benefit from sitting for a while is Leinart.

I don't think so. IMO we should definately draft a QB this year but let him learn from the coaches and veteran QB's on the team first.

No, if we draft Cutler, he won't start next year

You start the rookie QB if he out plays the competition in camp and outperforms the competition in the preseason games.

It's not likely and if it happens it's because he played significantly better than the competition.

There is NO WAY you start a rookie next year!!! 9 times out of ten, you will ruin a TRUE talent by throwing them to the wolves the first year!!! How many rookies have started in their rookie season in the past 30 years? I am not talking about the 1st game, let's say 2nd or later??? I'll bet you can count hem on 2 hands with digits left over!!!!

How many rookies do we consider BUSTS because they didn't perform well in their rookie season??? I bet there would be more than you can count if you had 2 sets of hands!!! Hell, I remember there were several out he that was claiming that RONNIE was a bust after the 1st 3-4 games of the season!!!

It is VERY RARE to find a rookie that can jump in and make an immediate impact... Especially at QB...

What do you want? A ring next year or wait for a couple of years?

Just a thought!:D

The only way we start a rookie is if somehow we get Lienart, but because there is almost no chance of that happening I would say no.

Bottom line, no matter how you look at it, the guy who wins the position battle (at whatever position) in preseason/camp is more than likely the guy who will start. If a coach feels the rookie is the guy, then he's the guy. I think you can put a rookie QB in without putting him under overwhelming pressure. Rothlisberger is a perfect example. He really wasn't asked to do too much. He was able to slowly get a feel for the game with no pressure on his shoulders because of a really good running game and an above average defense. Alot, or most, of the teams with rookie QBs make the huge error of throwing a young QB in the game and placing the weight of the game (and team success) on their shoulders. That's what ruins a potentially good young QB. Not many rookie QBs can come in and immediately carry a team. (We know one who did) But it isn't too much to ask a rookie QB to come in and manage a game and know his limitations and allow the talent around him to carry HIM while he learns. I think it really depends on the coach and his approach. There have been QBs in the past that I think would have been great QBs but were ruined by coaches who made serious mistakes by immediately putting the "savior" pressure on a rookie. But a good coach, one who is not overzealous, will recognize a players limitations and his lack of experience and take that into consideration when game planning and not put too much on his young guy's plate. But it's not out of the question at all for a rookie QB to start and to be successful. He just has to have the ingrediants in place to BE successful. Not to keep on about it, but here is another example of what I mean: When a rookie QB comes in and plays for a team that is mediocre to good is more likely to have success early and throughout his career because the pressures of being great aren't immediate. Let's take Alex Smith for example: had Smith been drafted by, let's say the Dolphins, his play would have been soooo much better because he came to a team with talent already and a coach who would know how to properly utilize him. But he went to San Fran, a team in total disarray and he looked absolutely frazzled. The environment he is playing in had failure all over it. Back to Rothlisberger: He went to a team that was good already. The pressure wasn't on him. He was just out there performing within his limitations while learning and improving. Now, look how he has matured.
So, I really think it depends on the situation. A good team drafting a QB normally means better immediate success. A poor team usually spells disaster for a QB thrown in too early.

Noooooooooooooooooo way. We need to win now. Zach and Jason are not getting any younger and if we could not get Marino a ring I would like us to get those guys one.

definitely no unless a miracle happened and linehart fell down to us. but since thats not gonna happen, we shouldnt start a rookie qb.

As much as I'd like to win now too. I don't think we can win a SB w/ Frerotte. I also know we can't win w/ a rookie. So unless we upgrade at QB with a veteran, I'd rather give the rookie a chance to give him one year of on-field experience which will make him that much better in year #2.
