Five Time Champion
Parcells & Co. Missed any of the players they had targeted or did they get the ones they wanted Initially?
Ireland admitted in his post-draft press conference that we missed out on some players we had targeted. Consensus is that's due to poor screening of our later round targets, which allowed other teams to snag our picks before we could.
Link?
It's on the Dolphins main site amongst others, one second and I'll have a link.

Not that I doubt you...but I doubt anything the Dolphins say...regarding the draft or the players.

(On if he looks back at anything and wishes he had done something different) – “I feel real good. I feel real good to be honest with you. There were a couple players – I won’t go in to who they were – that got taken maybe a couple picks before us that we wished we would have had, but we’re extremely happy with the group we got. We feel really good.â€
(On if there was a concern that Shawn Murphy would be picked by another team prompting the Dolphins to trade up to take him) – “We were sitting there at pick No. 115. We saw a center, a guard and a guard go right there and I said, ‘you know what, I don’t want to wait on this guy.’ He was the guy we targeted so we decided to give the seventh up to go ensure we got him.â€
The two statements I quoted from the transcript are significant because:
A) Ireland made a mistake in screening Greco, and the Rams got him before we had a chance
B) We had to give up a pick to move up to get Murphy - because Ireland made a mistake in screening him too and it forced our hand.
C) While there is some standard GM blah-blah-blah surrounding it, the admittance that there are players that we wished we could have gotten is, as far as I can tell, a very, very rare admittance. I don't care if it's a pie in the sky, "boy, I wish we could have taken all the guys in the top 10" kinda throwaway comment, you almost never hear stuff like that from the front office. In particular, Groves and Greco are two of those players we certainly had highly rated.
I think this has more importance;
On if all the players selected are on the board) – “Absolutely. We would never take a player who’s not on our board.â€
I don't see where he states that he rated Groves and Greco...above the players they took. In fact after selecting Merling...I would assume the need for Groves was negated because they selected their next player of need Henne.
Again...with the first pick in the third round...they easliy could have taken Greco...but they traded down two spots to select a player they admit they scouted since last May..Langford. I doubt they had Greco rated higher than Langford...otherwise they wouldn't have traded down.
You have to go back and read what I said earlier in that they made a miscalculation and a mistake with Greco.
Groves was also highly rated. He was also off the board by our second pick of the 2nd round. Remember Jacksonville giving the farm away for Harvey and Groves during the draft? Groves went at pick 52.
If you don't believe me, you don't have to. You'd be wrong not to believe that they didn't have Groves and Greco on their board for certain, and that they were pretty highly vauled by the Dolphins, but that's anyones prerogative.
What I do know is that they selected Merling at 32 instead of Groves...what I do know is that they selected Henne at 57 instead of Greco...and what I do know is they selected Langford two spots down, instead of selecting Greco at the top of the third round. We can assume anything...but reality then hits.
Ugh. Once again:
Merling > Groves ~= Henne > Greco > Langford.
Merling we got. Groves we couldn't have gotten, because he was gone. Jacksonville traded up to get him. Groves may or may not have been rated higher/lower/the same as Henne, but it was close in any regard. Henne was certainly higher on our board than Greco. We screwed up with Greco though, and traded down with the Lions instead of drafting him at our 64 pick. We got Langford, who was still a good player, but not the guy we originally wanted there. There's no assumptions. That's a lot of smart people in the know reporting on this.
I consider this discussion over. For further discussion on Miami draft picks this year and years past, I direct you to resources such as:
