I know that when a team signs a veteran free agent, the only years and dollars that matter are the signing bonus and the first 3 years' salary. They just do 6 or 7 years so they can get a lower cap number for the first few years.

However, with these rookie contracts, I'm having a hard time figuring out if the team will actually spend $60M over 6 years, or if there's another way to figure out the true value.

I'm having a hard time finding details on these deals. On rotoworld it says that Jamarcus Russell has all 6 years base salaries guaranteed, and Calvin Johnson has his 4th and 5th year base salaries guaranteed.....so based on that you can't really look at the first 3 years.

Anyways, I'm confuzled. Are we really going to have to pay $60M to our 1st pick, or is that just an inflated number because the contract will likely be redone after the 3rd year?

It will be more like $60ish million with $30ish million guaranteed. For the first pick in the draft though, you pretty much have to let his contract run out before getting rid of him to try and get something out of him if he is failing. So it is basically guaranteed as far as we are all concerned.

Yep it is why people trading up for the top picks is rare b/c of the financial investment. I wish the NBA system for paying rookies was in place.
