Ronnie is a versatile running back, there is not many of those in the league. He is just as good a receiver as he is a running back. I think the wildcat formation showed just how valuable and versatile he really is.
Look at our offense in 2007. Granted we didn't win any games during the 7 game span Ronnie played in, but the offense was night and day. Ronnie was tearing things up and at the moment he went down, he was leading the league in total yards from scrimmage. He had basically 1,000 total yards in 6 and a half games. When he went down, the running game basically stalled, and the line all of a sudden was giving up more sacks. Why? Because there was not a dominating running back that could take over games and force defenses to focus on him to open up the passing game.
Nobody in their right mind would think he was going to rush for 1500 yards a year after tearing his ACL. He played at a much higher level then most thought, but it is usually the second year back when players who suffer that injury get back to their old ways.
He may not put up the huge numbers, but his versatility makes this offense so much better. There is no reason to look at replacing him this year. Running back is a position that does not need any tinkering. We have a Pro Bowler as a starter, a former Pro Bowler as a backup who had 659 yards rushing. Cobbs is a special player who can come in for certain situations and spice things up.
The running back position does not need to be addressed. Things are only going to get better. Ronnie will be two years removed from his surgery, Ricky will finally get to play two straight years and the interior of the offensive line will be improved with the addition of Grove and the returns of Smiley and Thomas.
If healthy, Ronnie will definitely be a 1200+ yard back this year.
