I'm a bit confused with the McCown signing. He's not exactly the wily veteran type and has had a middling pro career thus far. He is also only about a year older than Beck.

Was McCown signed to push Beck or actually challenge Beck for the starting job? If we go into the season with McCown as our starter than I'm already depressed. It would be another year wasted on a backup QB the team is hoping steps up to the plate as a franchise QB ala Feeley, Feidler, etc.

It doesnt prove much although I think McCown is our starter at this point unless Beck steps up.

Yep, McCown will start.
For those bashing him, he actually played fairly well in Arizona.
Remember their OLine was horrible and all they did was pass and he had some decent games.
Compared to Cleo Lemon he is an all-pro.
He also cost less than Volek will.

I believe that McCown is a veteran insurance policy. I also believe that we will draft a QB as high as the 2nd or 3rd round. My honest opinion is that Beck will be given every opportunity to win this job, and should he falter McCown will be there to keep us afloat.

Hopefully Parcells, Ireland and Sporano see Beck as the starter and brought in McCown to be a veteran back-up (his contract is that of a back-up).

Always good to have depth at quarterback. Let Beck, and Mccown battle, while we build a rookie that we will draft.

McCown signing simply proves that we only had 1 quarterback on the roster.

You depth chart needs to have 3. Simple as that..

So if they wanted him to start they should have payed him more?

I'm not saying his contract precludes him from starting, just that he is thought of as a back-up at this point in his career. If he is in there, I hope he plays like an All-Pro.

I think he will start this year.

Beck will be battling whoever we draft for the back-up job. Unless he blows everyone away at training camp which I honestly DO NOT predict will happen...

Im sure McCown did not want too long of a contract especially with a 2nd round pick and possible first overall pick coming.

Why wouldn't he want one if he was told he'd be the starter? The move more or less suggests that they told McCown he'd be competing in camp with Beck and whoever we'll draft (which I think will be a guy between rounds 2 and 4) and that he'd have a fair shot at winning the job. Essentially, I think the Dolphins want Beck to emerge as the winner but weren't sure enough of him to sign a "pure" backup. So they went to McCown who makes for an able stopgap option if Beck falters and won't become a locker room problem if he ends up holding a clipboard.

I think the McCown signing is a sign that we needed a veteran QB on the team because we only had 1 Qb and 2 open roster spots. ;)

I'm sure McCown was brought in to provide competition and be ready if Beck can't cut it, but I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that he's automatically our starter.

Because you would never TELL him he is the starter. He will compete for the job, he may win or lose but the contract has nothing to do with it.
