There seemed to be some confusion today about whether or not Tomlin would receive a second interview this week. Chris Morensen hasn't corrected his story that Tomlin would receive a second interview on Monday, before Brian Schottenheimer's Tuesday interview.

I thought that maybe Tomlin's interview was canceled/postponed due to the re-signing of Capers. But in Mort's story about the Capers extension he still claims that Tomlin will be in Miami on Monday.

Does the Capers deal preclude Tomlin or any other defensive head coach from getting the job?

While I don't think it is necessary that a head coach run only the system he knows, I am wondering if there is a precedent for a head coach abandoning his old system in the first year as a head coach.

Don't have the link, It's in one of these threads but Tomlin himself said he has not been asked to come back for a second interview and declined to comment with regards to the first interview.

I read that earlier today while watching the games and didn't investigate.

Was that denial before or after the Capers deal was announced? Did he have a second interview, reported with a specific day, that was canceled?

I think you may be
on to someting. I don't think Tomlin will get the job because not only is he a defensive-minded coach, but he runs a 4-3 Defense.

My point is that I don't think that will disqualify him from being the head coach. The Capers situation, retaining a coordinator without a new head coach, is unique. And for good reason, he is one of the best if not the best defensive coordinators over the last decade. I don't think it is a given that Tomlin being hired would mean that his defense must be installed. Tomlin, being a young guy, may defer to Capers' experience and expertise.
Tomlin isn't necessarily a candidate because he is a scheme expert, but because he has head coach attributes and is a rising star.
I just can't claim that there is a precedent for a head coach abandoning the scheme he is familiar with in his first year.

Capers extension proves to me that his situation was definitely discussed during the initial interviews. It's my guess that all the "finalist" candidates will be those that agree to keep Capers as the DC.

No he never had an interview scheduled, people got word of an interview Tuesday and assumed it was Tomlin, it was later reported to be Schottenheimer at which point people assumed Tomlin had an interview Monday but that was not the case.

I think the reason they haven't scheduled an interview for Monday is because they are holding that day open to interview Cameron if the Chargers lose tommorow otherwise they likely offer the job to Schottenheimer on Tuesday.

Just speculating on that though...because of the reports of possibly naming a coach by Wednesday.

Unless of course they already hired Gailey :boohoo:

We will hire an offensive coach. NO need for a D minded coach when we just locked up Capers.

You know, this isn't the first time you've brought this up, but I wish you would stop.:club:No need giving out bad vibes.

I think it means they are leaning toward BS or CC

it certainly doesn't help his or any other defensive minded coaches case........ with a guy like Capers in that spot a young offensive mind hasta be our 1st consideration.

yup seems that way........ i couldn't pick one over the other right now tho, i guess we should hope for SD to lose ???

The HC decides what systems he wants to run. If Tomlinson is hired and decides to run a 4-3. Well, Capers will adjust not the other way around. The HC is incharge.

I agree. There is absolutely no point in bringing back a guy for a second interview if you don't intend to give him serious consideration. So, since Capers was retained it could only mean we are keeping the 3-4. Personally, I like that decision. I also don't quite get why we would bring in a cover two guy for HC with a 3-4 DC but it must have been addressed or Tomlin wouldn't be back for the next round of interviews. In the end, I think we are looking for offense.
