I like the trade this morning between the Raiders and Texans…Just a thought here that would be nice and could potentially help the trade status of Pat Surtain.

The Raiders traded away an excellent player in CB Pat Buchannan, thus a replacement is needed in that hole. Maybe the Raiders will either give us the second they got from Houston for Surtain. If so, they traded Buchannan for Surtain and a forth WHILE screwing KC at the same time.

If not, then I think it still puts the fire under KC’s a$$ to pull the trigger or miss a pro-bowl caliber CB.

Quite possibly since that takes an option away from KC who is teh hottest after a cb and has a desparate need at that position. Based on the actions by KC it seems they much rather get a veteran than rely on a rook. All the great FA cbs are gone, Buchanon and Surtain were the ony real cbs available for trade at that level they want and now Buchanon is gone. So it is Surt or a rook for KC IMO.

In a way the trade may help Surtains value, since Pat Buchannan doesn't have the credentials or is of the caliber yet that Surtain is. If I were Saban, I would look for nothing less than an offer like this.

Exactly if Buchannon is worth that, whats a perrineal Pro Bowler worth?

Is it possible Oakland is in the market for a CB? They just acquired a 2nd and a 3rd from the Texans, maybe we could trade Surtain for the 2nd they just acquired.

The problem is that the Raiders are right up against the salary cap. Maybe they'll do this if they can trade Woodson away who currently counts close to 10 mil against their cap because he's tagged with the Franchise. Yes, I could see the Raiders going hard after Surtain but only if/when they trade Woodson...if they trade him and not give him a new contract.

I think this definitely helps put more value to a Surtain trade. I also think that there would be no way that Oakland would now trade for Surtain. At least not until something is done with Woodson. Having both Woodson and Surtain (with a new deal) would be way too much of the salary cap invested in just two players.

Beat me to it!

Doubt it very seriously, a big reason why Buchanon was traded was contract. I doubt that Raiders would trade Buchanon only to take on Surtains salary.

it doesnt "hurt" his value. it only opens a few peoples eyes to what hes really worth.

buchannan is younger and just as good as surtain.
they got a 2nd and a 3rd rounder.

based on that surtain should get a mid to late 2nd rounder or a 3rd and a 4th.

but remember its all about what the team will give you. if noone offers a 2nd, you may have to settle for a 3rd, or even a 4th. it all depends if the team you trade with is dumb or smart.

an example of a DUMB team: the jets trading a starting former pro-bowl MLB to the vikings for a 7th rounder. LOL.

Has no one in this thread realized that the player that the Raiders traded was PHILLIP BUCHANON????? Wasn't Pat Buchanon a politician??

Buchanan is younger than Surtain, and carries a much lower base salary. So, we may not be able to get the exact same value. But, it does seem to solidify that a 4th round pick is definitely not enough.

they traded the CB, not the presidential canidate that noone voted for except some blind seniors who in the end ****ED up our country.

something is going to happen about this on draft day. we will end up with at least a 2nd round pick from somebody. Buchanann is not as good as surtain, maybethe chiefs will see the value they are getting.

I disagree with this analysis. Certainly, the question as to whether this impacts Surtain's value is a good one to raise and illustrates the differences between the two trades.

Our tendency is to compare the two talent wise and that is really not the issue. On a player vs player perspective Surtain has the better resume for sure, but Buchanon was highly touted and has had a rough time at Oakland with his injuries. He's still only 24 so he has a lot of room to grow and he can be a great kick/punt returner.

But, the real comparison relates to the contract. Buchanon is under a contract for the next few years and it is a very inexpensive one. The entire reason Surtain is not garnering a #1 pick or something more is because he has a big cap # and KC will have to give up a lot of bucks with a new contract. That's why he's not worth more than a 2nd round pick, at best.
