Does Wright get more $$ than other 7ths? Should he?

I was thinking about whether or not Rodrique Wright got a larger contract than other 7th rounders due to his college accolades.

Anybody know?

I for one think he deserves more than the others get. You don't want a guy who really knows his worth to get unhappy.

No, I dont think he should. I've never heard of a player whose stock fell, even dramatically prior to the draft demanding with a strong base to argue from he should be paid dramatically different.

Occasionally you might end up having someone get a better deal then the guy ahead of them or something like that, but I've never heard of someone demanding to get paid like someone slotted way ahead of them.

I dont think Wright ended up getting more money, either.

Chris Weinke got paid a 1st round contract despite being selected in the 4th. That was partially due to the fact his age dropped him below where he would of been selected talent wise. So its certainly not unprecidented.

Probably not very smart either. No way I would have given Weinke 1st round money. I think Wright should get 7th round money. If he can prove that he's worth more, then he'll get his payday.

7th-round picks receive minimum salary contracts. The only difference in total compensation is the amount of the signing bonus, and that is slotted based on where they were taken in the round. If anything was different about Rod Wright's contract, he may not have gotten all of his bonus up front because of his shoulder injury that will prevent him from playing this season.

What kind of contract did Chris Weinke get? Do you remember his rookie deal?

I though there is pay scale, and a rookie salary cap. I dont think you can give 7th rounders 4th round money.

I dont know what the exact numbers were. He was given a 5 year deal with a signing bonus typically awarded to players selected earlier.

You can sign players to whatever contract you deem fit as long as the sum of their contracts is under the "rookie cap." The easiest way to get around it is the same way they get around the regular cap....signing bonuses and increased contract length.

Weinke was drafted in 2001. Wasn't the rookie pool instituted in 2002?

[EDIT: Never mind - I found a reference to the rookie pool in 2001]
