I was fortunate enough to meet him one time and he was just a super nice guy and acted like we had known each other all our lives. The prime example of what a fan is supposed to be.
He was a huge part of the Orange Bowl atmosphere during the '70s and '80s. You always wanted him to be in front of your area.
My family would see him all the time after the Dolphin games at Shorty's on Dixie Highway near Dadeland. That's the original Shorty's and was the only one in existence at the time. Denny had this buggy type vehicle that was plastered with Dolphin stuff. I've seen online images of a big white van. But that must have been an upgrade for show purposes. The original was much smaller and wheel to wheel with stickers and stuff. Every square inch was covered.
Dolfan Denny was the Dolphins version of a super fan while the Canes had the Yamma Yamma guy Jim Fleming. He was incredible, leading the raucous Skit Skat chants from in front of the student section. That's why Canes games were a blast during the late '60s even when the team wasn't very good and not many in attendance.
Both of those guys started at about the same time during the mid '60s and on speculation. Neither team was very good or had logical prospects of reaching the top. But both of them experienced multiple championships and became local legends before dying fairly young at about the same time.
Dolfan Denny, may you rest in peace brother. I never knew you, or even knew who you where. But you left an amazing impression on millions of us Dolphins Fans. You were one of the reasons watching Dolphins games were fun. Thank you for the memories, as a young Dolphins fan growing up. All I know is; you were the coolest dude on TV.
