Dolphins coach Adam Gase, who entered last season as the NFL's youngest head coach at 38 years old, proved his mettle by turning a 1-4 squad into a 10-6 playoff contender. And as a reward he could earn NFL Coach of the Year honors when the league has its annual awards show on Saturday.
Similarly, Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake, who overcame a season-ending Achilles injury in 2015 to record 11.5 sacks and make the Pro Bowl last season, could be named NFL Comeback Player of the Year.
Both Gase and Wake are believed to be among the top candidtaes for their respective awards at the NFL Honors Awards Show.
Gase, the former Denver and Chicago offensive coordinator, used a no-nonsense approach to turn the Dolphins into a playoff team and end a seven-year playoff drought. Perhaps his defining moment came midseason when he cut a trio of offensive linemen — Billy Turner, Dallas Thomas and Jamil Douglas — for their poor performances.
It was a move that got the attention of everyone on the roster. But Gase's success began before that startling shakeup.
Well deserving of both of them.
