Three of the NFL's most successful teams from the 2013 regular season — Kansas City, Seattle and Carolina — hired their general manager after they hired their coach. The Dolphins, who will follow that practice, can only hope things work out as well.
Hiring a general manager with the coach already in place isn't the ideal situation in the NFL. But it's not unusual in recent years. Among the 18 general managers hired since 2010, nine took their jobs with a head coach already in place.
Among those 20 teams that had the general manager in place before the coach, eight (40 percent) made the playoffs.
Among the 11 teams that had the coach in place before the general manager, seven (64 percent) finished below .500.
The Dolphins will fit into the category of having the general manager named after the coach because all indications are Joe Philbin will return for his third season
