http://www.miamiherald.com/1190/story/188315.html Both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins stepped out on very thin limbs this offseason and one of those clubs will soon experience a long fall to reality as we watch Joey Porter play.

The Steelers, you see, were of the opinion that the pass-rushing, playmaking linebacker was on the decline and no longer was worth the $5 million due him in 2007, the final year of his contract.

So despite the Super Bowl memories and with all deference to his leadership skills, Pittsburgh unceremoniously cut Porter.

The Dolphins looked at the same player the Steelers discarded and saw a star that was not only still in his prime, but one that would remain a tormentor of offenses for years to come.

So Miami signed Porter to the richest free agent contract of the team's offseason, giving him a whopping $32 million over five years. To underline exactly how confident Miami brass of Porter's continued prowess, they made $20 million of the contract guaranteed, all but assuring Porter he will be a Dolphins until he retires.

I'm sure Porter will pick everything up. He hasn't had to learn a new system in a long time. He's just gotta buckle down in the classroom with the coaches and other players and soak that stuff up. He's a professional, so I'm sure it's just a matter of time. His brain sounds like the thing that will get the big workout this month. He probably still has all the physical skills.

All the guys on the defense have had trouble picking it up ... Jason Allen last year springs to mind. He's in a sophisticated Capers defense now. Last year, Zach called it "a thinking man's defense" ... although they simplified it somewhat for this year.

Oddly enough, I think youngster Channing Crowder might be a good guy for Joey to hang out with and study the defensive schemes. Channing might the smartest one as far as the book learning goes. I hear Channing was in the Honor Society in high school, got high scores on his SAT and graduated early from Florida. I was really impressed when I heard about that when he was a rookie.

I take that back, maybe Channing is the 2nd smartest. I forgot about Donnie Spragan. He graduated from Stanford with a civil engineering degree. That is very impressive. Not an easy school at all. Joey should definitely try to hang out with Donnie and get some study tips or something.

I thought it was a decent article. They had a real good point all the way through. The Steelers and Dolphins very much did set it up into an all-or-nothing thing. The Steelers didn't even want to pay Porter $5 million for one year. The Dolphins are paying him $32 million over 5 years. That's a BIG disparity.

Yet for all that the author did a good job pointing out how in reality neither team is necessarily wrong. They just valued what he can give each team differently.

I can't wait to see JT, Porter and Roth terrorize QBs this season.

Don't forget Vonnie Holliday and Rodrique Wright. All should be adept at getting to the quarterback.

Pretty good article from Armando. I particularly like this part.

But seeing this situation as black and white -- as either Porter will bust or bust out -- is something of a mistake because one must also weigh the gray possibilities.

What are those?

That maybe both the Steelers and Dolphins knew what they were doing. Perhaps Porter, at 30, isn't the same player he was at 25, and perhaps the quickness and explosion that helped him embarrass overmatched linemen isn't all there any more.

But with Miami it doesn't have to be. Because the Dolphins have Taylor, most teams will be so rapt with blocking the league defensive MVP, that it will create opportunities for Porter.

And that will help both Porter and the Dolphins.

''Obviously when you have a guy like Jason Taylor, he's going to draw a lot of attention and a lot of people will turn their protection toward him,'' Miami defensive coordinator Dom Capers said. ``They did last year. But when that happens, from an X and O standpoint, they have to block the guy from the opposite side with a back.''

And the Dolphins think Porter versus a running back is a match-up Porter should win something like, oh, 100 percent of the time.

The only thing he forgot to mention is that Porter will be playing a different position in the Dolphins defense. Far as I know he was the ROLB in Pitt, a sport reserved for the premier pass rusher (hence JT's position as ROLB/RDE)...and now he'll be the LOLB.

If we increase his role in pass rush, this puts more pressure on Zach, Channing and Yeremiah in coverage.

Even if Porter is somehow not the same player, which I seriously doubt, he will still be the best LB to play across from Zach ever...

isn't Porter pretty good at coverage..

isn't Porter pretty good at coverage..

Yeah, he is pretty good in coverage. In 02 he had 4 picks which is unheardof from a LB. In 04 he had 11 passes defensed which again is unheardof from a LB

he sealed the defeat for us in our opening game last year with a pick six.... He's gonna fit right in and help our defense out immensely... everyones job on defense got slightly easier the minute porter signed his contract. He also brings valueable leadership, and not just that, he brings a toughness and trash-talking- back it up me and my home boys are gonna jump you- mentallity aswell :) lol.

Considering Porter and Crowder are the best OLB tandem Miami's had in over two decades and it's one of those positions ever since they've had a problem trying to fill (call it The Curse Of Hugh Green), even if Crowder sneaks a few snaps to the inside when they line up Taylor standing up.

Actually that would make their OLB tandem even better in those situations, which is saying something given Crowder's ability.

itll be nice watchin porter and taylor blitzin some plays and the next them dropping in to coverage with thomas blitzin up the middle, and then porter blitzin taylor droppin into coverage, and then taylor rushin n porter covering a rb. lots and lots of blitz and coverage options in the 3-4
