The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins have been impressed with second-year S Walt Aikens' "maturation" this offseason.

The 2014 fourth-rounder was suspended last Week 17 for an unspecified violation of team rules. He was primarily a special teamer as a rookie, but did contribute 64 snaps on defense. Aikens won't open the year as a starter, but could emerge as the leader for snaps behind Reshad Jones and Louis Delmas.

Fine with me.

Cant have enough good players either starting or at depth.

We are now getting all these players back from Hickeys first draft that were cut short from injuries or just needing another year. That draft from last year could end up being as phenominal as this one appears to be this year.

We have a crap load of promising young players on this team right now. Its refreshing!

I think if this team can get some nice surprisingly developments from 2nd and 3rd year players from the latter rounds this team will be able to surpass the Patriots! Aikens,Turner,Taylor,Fede, etc.

i love hearing walt aikens might be a player, but don't sleep on michael thomas! :)

Aikens has a lot of physical talent to play either corner or safety. Good to hear he's progressing, I think we really lucked out with Hickey.

Question - Is Walt Aikens viewed strictly as a Safety or is he getting a look at CB as well? We have 2 decent Safeties in Louis Delmas and Reshad Jones, but there is a starting CB position up for grabs.

There is going to be a lot of playing time in the secondary up for grabs. Besides Grimes and Jones nothing is set in stone.

He played some CB last year but I believe they see him as a FS. He's a little stiff in the hips for CB in this system IMO but he has good ball awareness and he's able to plant and drive when the balls in the air. He definitely has the size for safety.

I don't think he has the hips to play CB full-time against fast twitch wideouts, but i think it might benefit us to use him at times against some taller WRs from other teams in sub packages. Otherwise, he's probably pegged for FS to use his ball skills in coverage.

not good for will davis

Love the guy! Outside of Grimes I honestly believe he has the 2nd best instincts for positioning himself and playing the ball as a defender. All of those ints and near ints during last training camp and preseason games weren't a fluke.

BUT his athleticism is unfortunately going to make it very hard for him. He's already not the biggest or most physical guy on the team. Then you add on that he's relatively slow for an NFL DB, he lacks burst, has questionable hips, quickness and acceleration. It just doesn't translate at this level. Darn shame seems to be a great kid!

Damn Shame!

So many young guys who we as Phans know so little about by not seeing them play vs NFL competition. We are in a win now mode, with coaches and FO jobs on the line. They have to believe in these guys.

If they are right we could be in for quite a ride this year on the Dolphins Express. :)

Not really, Davis is a corner, we probably want Aikens at safety/emergency cb.

Yeah, Aiken and slot covers can be used a boundary covers if need be, and be better than guys like Lowell Rose last year but, no effect on Davis.
