As an indication of how efficient our offense really is, and how high our ceiling is -- the Miami Dolphins have the best 3rd down percentage in the league.

By a full 5%, at 56%!!!!

The runners up are:

Colts - 51%
Vikings - 49%
Giants - 48%
Ravens - 47%

It will be worth watching how much our defense can shore up, as our youth matures and we correct our misfortunes in defending the big play.

I believe that with Henne at the helm, and the best rushing attack in the league, we can match up against any team in the NFL. What's more, he has TWO starts under his belt.

that's pretty freaking awesome considering the teams right after us on that list!

This is a huge, huge stat, one you can really hang your hat on compared to most of the other stats or rankings thrown around.

Now if only we could do better on the defensive side of this equation...

Last year we finished ranked roughly 10th-12th on both sides of the ball. Our offense has improved, defense has regressed (so far).

Converting 3rd downs and Stopping 3rd downs are BIG time stats.

We owe a special thank you to the Jets for assisting on this..........:hump:

Last year we were 23rd in 3rd down conversions.

This was largely due to our problems converting anything over a 3rd and 8.

If you notice everyone else on that list are "pound it down your throat" run teams with the exception of the colts. A running game that can keep you in 3rd and short and then get you 1 or 2 yards with few negative plays on 3rd does wonders for long sustained drives.

We are quickly becoming what Saban always said he wanted us to be, a team nobody wants to play.

The mark of a great coaching staff/front office, is the ability to correct our weakness. Last year we struggled with this area and now we are leading the league. This isn't something that happens by accident. It happens by design, planning, hard work, and execution.

Wow I love this coaching staff.

Stat within the Stat. I would love to know what our average gain is on 1st down.

The main reason why we are converting with such a high percentage on 3rd down is because we are leaving ourselves with manageable distances on 3rd down, we're not in 3rd and long... but more like 3rd and short/medium, thus keeping the running game in the picture.

I believe it was commented on a few times the last 2 games by the commentators but I cant recall the yardage we were getting on 1st down...

This team is good guys. Mark my words, one more off-season and we are going to be at the top of the afc with teams like the colts, ravens, etc...

A star returner like the dude in chicago would really turn this club into a powerhouse in a hurry cus then our starting spot would be much much better.

We have to continue that sort of performance on 3rd down to be successful.

But its a great way to start.

I think our D is number one in stopping other teams on 3rd down to. I would love to see who leads in time of possesion? I bet we have that off the Indy game alone.......

When you run the ball as well as we do, you get the 3rd and 2's and 3's and it makes it much easier. Plus Dan Henning is a damn good play caller.

This is the primary reason. If you look at the other teams ranked behind us, they all run the ball well to very well. The exception would be the Colts, but P. Manning - as we know - is an equalizer of sorts.
