Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake took the field Thursday night against Atlanta on third and 9. It was the Falcons' fifth offensive play of the game, meaning for the first time in a long time, Wake wasn't a starter.

No biggie.
"Finally, I'm just playing football, just having fun," said Wake, who unofficially played five snaps in his preseason debut, a 17-6 victory for the Dolphins.
Wake, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, said he still isn't 100 percent recovered from October's season-ending Achilles injury. And in light of that, for the time being, he doesn't mind being used as a third-down pass-rushing specialist, as opposed to an every-down player.
"You have to start thinking long term," Wake said. "Of course, I want to be out there for every snap, but is that going to be best come December and January?"
It even sounds as if there might be a snap count on Wake.

IF he really will be ued as a 3rd down situational pass rush player, You'd have to think teams would game plan an up tempo offense to have wake stay on the sidelines. At least in my opinion....thoughts?

If I recall correctly, when he came into the league JT had been relegated to this type of role and served as a mentor to Wake. I'm sure Wake will pay it forward as well, total class act in addition to being a great player, here's to him having a healthy and productive season :brewskis:

In a weird way. I think he could get almost as many or even more sacks as a specialist. Imagine a fresh, hungry Wake coming in every so often against a tired tackle. Not hard to imagine him getting a sack a game that way.- I like it.

He will get plenty of snaps and be very production. IMHO more than a pass rush specialist. Just not a guy who is getting every snap he can. They just have to keep him fresh, not cut him back to just obvious passing downs. I still think he will play enough to get 10+ sacks. We better hope so, because I don't any other double digit sack guys on that D-line unless Mario Williams is holding back except maybe Suh.

Yeah. Big drives Wake is in. We NEED a stop? Wake is in. Keep him at like 20 snaps a game and barring freak injuries, he'll be fresh all game all season.

Certainly. Especially vs well rehearsed teams HUNH attacks like that of the Patriots where Wake has been historically disruptive in more obvious passing situations.

I doubt any of us will complain. Who doesn't want Wake as a Fin as long as possible? Let him do what he does best while he heals. Once he is 100% wait two weeks then up his snap count. I doubt he will be doing anything other than starting come December.

he got pressure pretty much every time he was in there. just keep him fresh.

Leading up to preseason week three all we heard was how superhuman Wake was and how he looks as good as before. Amazing that it goes from all that hype to now he is just a pass rush specialist. Why didn't we re-sign Vernon again?

Because the Giants paid Vernon more than JJ Watt for 8 good games last season

outstanding memory. Well said. He learned from one of the classiest team-first guys around.

exactly. I don't know why people don't seem to get that we simply could not afford to keep OV. I'm sure we would have loved to keep him - but it wasn't in the budget - at all.

His anyone on the roster even better than Wake vs. the run? I know Wake is very average in that departement but it doesnt look like there's an upgrade on the roster at the moment...
