Dolphins Head Coach Adam Gase provided an update Wednesday on rookie cornerback Xavien Howard, who has missed the past five games because of a knee injury sustained in practice.

Gase said Howard was making progress in his rehabilitation, but he isn’t quite ready to return and the Dolphins are going to be careful with how they handle him.

“He’s still rehabbing and just doing a lot of strengthening things,” Gase said. “It’s one of those processes when you kind of see him working out and running and things like that, you’re excited that you see him look like he feels good. But we just know we have to be smart with what we do. We don’t want any setbacks. We are going to make sure that if we get him back, it’s at the right time.

“We are not going to put him out there too early, we’re not going to rush him back. We are going to make sure that this timetable is right. We feel like this guy is going to be one of those guys that is going to be here for a long time and we want to just make sure that we handle this correctly.”

It's especially encouraging how they feel about him in the long term. Clearly they liked him enough to move up and grab him but it's telling that they are investing this much planning into how they handle him.

Each passing week, and win, brings us closer to being at full strength (as close as you can be without #20 on the field).

Who would've thought a rookie corner would be this important to our season's outlook.

after watching what happened to all world jake long.... I can't disagree with this approach.

pretty much tells you that they view him as a long term #1 corner

can't say I disagree...he has the look of a top 10 guy...maybe even top 5

Love this kid. Coaching staff clearly does too. Rare to hear this much praise about a rookie who's played in about 4 games. Says a lot. Think they're approaching it the right way, think long-term with this guy.

So far it seems Gase stands firmly on the side of caution. That's not all bad.

Win or lose out this season, Gase just got a genuine Vote of Confidence from Ross. He's in it for the long haul and is not gonna monkey with a future long term #1 corner for the sake of a few games now.

Very good point! Not sure if you saw that he tore his Achilles Sunday. Really sad how injuries derailed a possible HoF career

he's been in the league, what 8 years, and this is at least his 4 or 5 trip to the IR? yeah, he really needs to take his millions and think about his quality of life and retire.

Some players are just more durable than others....Ryan Tannehill should be in a wheelchair after the last 5 years

If we were to slip out of the playoff hunt, I'd not be surprised to see them shut Howard down for the season the way this is playing out

The sad thing is our season was over, keeping Long out there did nothing but significantly shorten his career and keep him from ever regaining form. If he were to sue, I would have no issue with it at all!

It was game 4 of the preseason but yeah our season was pretty much over by then that season.
