DAVIE - Dolphins cornerback Michael Lehan participated in his first practice of training camp on Monday, and the projected starter is optimistic he'll play in Saturday night's exhibition game against Kansas City.
Lehan, who started 14 games last season, has spent the first three weeks of training camp rehabilitating a high right ankle sprain he suffered during June's mini-camps.
During Monday's session he said he got tangled up with receiver Ted Ginn Jr. during a drill and walked away from that collision confident he was healthy enough to play.
"I feel pretty good. One thing I wanted to do is press Ted Ginn and see how I ran with him and give that a judge; see how my quickness is," said Lehan, who contributed 56 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery last season. "I'm feeling pretty good today."
If he's not healthy enough to contribute by Aug. 30, which is when NFL teams must cut their roster to 53 players, the Dolphins could place Lehan on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Being on the PUP would allow the Dolphins to keep him on the team until Oct. 14 without taking up a roster spot. After that cut off point, which includes a 21 day workout period, he'd have to be activated or waived.
The Dolphins presently have eight cornerbacks battling for five or six roster spots. Allen and Goodman are considered locks to make it, with Lehan, Nathan Jones, Travis Daniels, Joey Thomas, Will Billingsley and Chris Roberson competing for the other spots.
