The Miami Dolphins and agent Jim Sims moved close to a deal in weekend negotiations, with coach Dave Wannstedt also speaking with Burnett by telephone.

The Dolphins originally offered Burnett a contract worth the NFL veteran minimum of $750,000 but are now willing to make a multiyear deal.

If the Dolphins sign Burnett, he will serve as the top backup behind starters Jason Taylor and Daryl Gardener. Furthermore, the Dolphins like that Burnett can shift inside to tackle. [linkme]Talk about this deal...[/linkme]

Furthermore, the Dolphins like that Burnett can shift inside to tackle.

I didn't know this. That's good because the Phins allowed 111 ypg rushing last year 17th in the league.

Forget Burnett for a minute.
With a Gardener, Bowens, Chester, and Taylor line, I would expect that number to go way down.

InFin, It seems like we're alright at DE. Why not focus on TE and WR where we seem to have lingering injuries and at LB where we have no depth.

I don't see it like that Sherif.....If Gardener goes down, who takes his place? D. Bowens? Ogunleye? Are either of these guys ready to START? I know that they are both expected to be good rushing the passer, but can either of them hold up against the run? I don't think so, I could be wrong, but i would feel much better if we had a veteran like Burnett who has been to war as a starter and can be called upon to do it again if needed.
.....and BTW, Gardener didn't practice yesterday, because of a back strain......
.....and this all hinges on Gardener being ABLE to play DE. What if he can't do it?

TE....yesterday I would have said ride it out with who we have, but today with Mayes' mysterious ankle injury, I am having serious doubts about his durability and character. I wouldn't be upset if we searched for another TE.

I think Hendricks, Galyon, and Moore are good enough to head into camp with as backup linebackers.
Maybe one more signing would be good but I wouldn't be scared to go with who we have now.

...same with the WR pos.......

I disagree. There's too big a drop off from Zack to his replacement. I hope Morlon can play at a high level this year.

TE I think is a big need now. Like you said Mayes charecter is called into question now.

WR, we saw what happened when Chambers was out. If Simmons makes the team and can play at a high level then ok if not we don't have depth there either.

OL some have expressed concerns over Ruddy and Alot hinges on Brent Smith at LT.

I agree, that there are questions at all the positions you mentioned, but there is NO BODY backing up DG who can play the run effectively.
I don't understand why people aren't more alarmed by this?!?

I am alarmed for sure. We need a run stopping DE to replace DG or JT if they are out.

and this is also distubing:
Patriots | Still In Running for Burnett - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
8:57 PT: According to the Boston Globe, the New England Patriots remain in the running for free agent DE Rob Burnett (Ravens).

Sure there's gonna be a big dropoff after Zach. He's the #2 MLB in the NFL. I think it's gonna be Russell, Hendricks, and Galyon. Corey Moore can't beat out any of the those guys. He'll be cut again.

Burnett will be a welcome addition. He's one of the strongest guys around. So he'll play the run well. I'm betting he'll start at least 4 games for DG in 2002. And maybe he could be like Bromell and rush well from the inside.

I'm alarmed also....

We do need a veteran backup for DG and JT in case of an injury.

We do need a better backup at linebacker. I'm hoping the Fins try to grab NO OLB Kevin Mitchell (expected to be released today). He can also play MLB, so he would be a great addition.

In a thread that was posted yesterday concerning our tightend situation, I responded to the post as letting the TE's ride it out this season, but this injury now has swayed my position. It all depends on how serious this "sprain" is. We might want to re-consider going after Remiersma now.

this "" seals the deal - sign Rob...

STILL LOOKING

The Dolphins, still communicating with the agent for Baltimore free agent defensive end Rob Burnett, 34, have asked offensive lineman Leon Searcy for insight on his former nemesis and teammate. Searcy was a longtime Steeler and Jaguar, facing Burnett twice each year.

''I don't care about his age,'' said Searcy, injured during his only season at Baltimore and signed by Miami this offseason. ``He brings it. He's a hard worker, leads by example, doesn't run off his mouth. Every year I was in the league, I voted for him to go to the Pro Bowl. No one gave him his due respect.''

What I mean is, how can this not be the number one priority?

While alot of people may WANT another LB, WR, OL or TE.....we NEED another DE.
Big difference...

exactly- what is scarier - McKnight starting in place of OG or vica-versa or D Bo starting in place of JT or DG.
