Gase said he remains confident in the 34-year-old Cutler, his quarterback in Chicago in 2015 when Gase was the
Bears’ offensive coordinator, and added that it’s not Cutler who is making most of the mistakes on offense.
“I know where the ball is supposed to go, I know who’s supposed to do what on every play,” Gase said. “If we protect him and give him a second to throw the ball, we’ll be alright. If he’s going to get hit from start to finish, I don’t care who you put back there. We need to do a better job of protecting him, being where we’re supposed to be.”
Gase acknowledged Cutler has “footwork issues” to resolve as well as ball protection issues. But Gase said Cutler, who was sacked four times in Sunday’s 20-0 loss to the
New Orleans Saints, must get better protection.
