So here’s one way to endear yourself to your players: Give up your first-class seat on a transatlantic flight.

After a week of strained relations between Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin and his quarterback, both were in considerably better spirits Friday, fatigue aside.

A possible reason: Ryan Tannehill stretched out in first class during the nine-hour flight, while Philbin was back in economy.

In fact, the entire coaching staff surrendered their comfy chairs and extra legroom, a concession not lost on the beneficiaries.

“The players are the ones who have to play the game,” Philbin explained.

Tannehill, who earlier in the week criticized his coach’s handling of the quarterback situation, appreciated the gesture.
Philbin’s actions suggest that he knows he could have handled the situation better. He announced Friday that he has tweaked his policy on announcing starters, which has essentially been don’t say anything to reporters.

Instead, he will use the weekly depth chart as a true (or, more accurately, truer) reflection on who will start, and that should be the assumption unless he announces differently.

Of course, more than anything, the team’s performance this year will determine whether Philbin is the coach of the Miami Dolphins beyond this season.

And while the extra sleep he bought his players with his seat switch probably won’t make the difference Sunday, it could only have helped his popularity among the rank and file.

“We spent more time together than we usually do in the past,” Tannehill said. “It was a fun trip.”

I'm pretty sure Cam Cameraon and his staff surrendered there first class seats to lineman on our last trip to London. Nothing to see here!

This is a good move regardless of the situation. You want your most important players to feel fresh for the game, and being crammed in a tiny seat for 10 hours probably won't help physical performance. I'm just wondering why this isn't always the case? (for all teams)

Good that Philbin's fessing up. People make mistakes, and it's good that he realizes he's made one.

In regards to releasing the weekly depth charts now, why is Philbin so Reactive instead of Proactive? In his 3 years here, I can't recall a time that he's gotten out in front of an issue. He's always waited for things to get worse before doing anything about it.

What a gesture lol. do we really need to hear about this lol

Well with Ross's history with hiring and firing I expect the extension any day now. Then he will fire him next year

Take it from me, someone who supported Philbin for two years, through thick and thin: Joe Philbin is never proactive about anything because Joe Philbin is a lousy coach.

Can you imagine having a middle seat between 2 OT's or DT's...

I was also a supporter. Until last week. And I think you're right, he's a lousy coach.

I supported Joe through a lot. I supported him when he brought in Mike Sherman and his crew of incompetents who had all just been fired from Texas A&M. I supported him through numerous bad ass-whippings in which the team came out unprepared and emotionless on both sides of the football. I supported him through the decision to 'move on' from solid football players because they were vocal. I supported him when he changed his mind and realized that he needed some leaders in the locker room. I supported him through a two game collapse at the end of last season, and through Bullygate.

I wavered after an ugly loss to Buffalo in which the entire team came out flat and unprepared again. I completely gave up after seeing it AGAIN against Kansas City. I'm now just absolutely sick of the man after he shot himself in the foot on Monday for no goddamn reason.

I hate it when I'm actively rooting for my owner to put the head coach out of his misery, but here we are and here we will be.

We heard you the last 100 times you posted that. Lets not turn every thread into a "Joe Philbin is a lousy coach" thread.

Fair enough. I'll keep it in the Joe Philbin is a lousy coach thread.

Going transatlantic in those tiny seats sitting next to a 310 lb football player is not comfortable. I'm just over 200 and I can barley fit in them

we are going to get spanked. Just like Tampa last year. Same **** different year IMO. Hope I'm wrong.

my point is players probably should be in better seats anyway esp on that flight. That should have been better planned by NFL and Dolphins.
