Some of the conversation within the Dolphins organization late last week and early this week included befuddlement over why fans and pundits are sweating Miami’s looming guard need. The belief within the team is the personnel department has a clear handle on what kind of player will fit at guard under coach Adam Gase’s offense.
And, according to sources, the team believes the type of player the Dolphins need is not exceedingly hard to find.

Stress levels are high because Dolfans (and Ryan Tannehill) have suffered from battered wife syndrome when it comes to the inability to find competency at the guard position.

But I agree fully with this approach because it shouldn't require a top 20 pick at every spot on the line to have success.

Hell Bushrod came in and performed at a level higher than any guard the last damn near decade. It shouldn't be too hard and Gase knows the type of player he needs there.

It's stated as though we've had competent guard play within the last decade and the subject has gone over our heads. Not even remotely the case.

Prove it.

Preface: Like every fan, I want Miami to get the best OGs possible. That said, two above average OGs aren't expensive. One top third OG and one above average OG isn't much more expensive. Don't skimp on run blocking.

In the part of the article I didn't quote . . . "In several . . . seasons, including last year, the Dolphins were forced to use multiple guard combinations due to injuries, poor play or some other circumstance. And so only once in the past 17 seasons have the Dolphins been able to field the same starting guard combo in consecutive years.
So now the Dolphins should understand why folks are skeptical about the team’s ability to fill in capably at guard."

Two? Aside from accidently getting Tunsil they havent managed to find one good guard in living memory

I wish I was as confident. Lets hope after the way the season started out with the OL play last year Gase is adimit about it being addressed correctly this year from the beginning.

Hahahhaha!!! I'll believe it when I see it. But yeah, this front office has yet to find even one competent starting Offensive Guard EVER! If it was so easy, why hasn't it happened yet?

The caveat is that there ARE guards out there. This front office has to make the right negotiations to land them. It would be quite a relief to be able to move onto another topic of conversation than the Dolphins' historically poor guard play/personnel.

It is not likely the Dolphins will spend extravagantly on two guards. The more likely course, according to those familiar with the team’s thinking, is addressing this issue by signing one free agent with starter potential and perhaps using a third- or fourth-round pick on a rookie.

And they wonder why we have concerns? Basically that says were going to pick up a Guard with potential, not proven, and a draft pick..and thats what I truly expect they wont spend big in a guard.

Gotcha. Thanks.

Here's an excerpt about the guard situation over the past 17 years.

2000: Mark Dixon and Kevin Donnalley.

2001: Mark Dixon and Todd Perry.

2002: Jamie Nails and Todd Perry.

2003: Jamie Nails and Todd Perry.

2004: Jeno James and Taylor Whitley.

2005: Jeno James and Rex Hadnot.

2006: Jeno James and L.J. Shelton.

2007: Chris Liwienski and Rex Hadnot.

2008: Justin Smiley and Ikechuku Ndukwe.

2009: Justin Smiley and Donald Thomas

2010: Richie Incognito and John Jerry.

2011: Richie Incognito and Vernon Carey.

2012: Richie Incognito and John Jerry.

2013: Richie Incognito and John Jerry. Yeah, um, Richie played eight games and then his little problem with Jonathan Martin came to light. Then the Dolphins moved on to Sam Brenner and Nate Garner at left guard.

2014: Daryn Colledge and Mike Pouncey.

2015: Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner. And you wonder why this team was 6-10 while Ryan Tannehill was sacked 45 times?.

2016: Laremy Tunsil and Jermon Bushrod.

The dolphins spending a third rounder on a guard. What could possibly go wrong?

And you nailed the part that worries me most. Naive or not, I can not believe Gase wants Tannehill and Ajayi behind two OGs - neither of whom has shown starter ability.

I miss the Richie-John Jerry glory days :( we thought we had it so bad - we were so innocent

so one in free agency and one in the draft

pretty much what I was figuring...although we don't have a 4th rounder so I'd feel more comfortable if we got it with the 3rd rounder...I'd really prefer though that this guard can play the pivot although that's probably gonna be a pretty rich draft pick use to get it...top 50

time to start scouting guards with pivot abilities and tackle kick inside guard converts
