The Miami Dolphins and New York Jets are heated rivals. However, the Jets did something last season that paved the way for the Dolphins in 2014.

Miami parted ways with longtime general manager Jeff Ireland after six years on Tuesday. The Dolphins completed their fifth consecutive non-winning season under Ireland. However, second-year head coach Joe Philbin remains on board.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, who lives in New York, essentially is copying the blueprint of the 2013 Jets in hopes of similar results.

Last year the Jets fired former general manager Mike Tannenbaum, who ironically could be a candidate for Miami's new opening. But New York retained head coach Rex Ryan, who went into season on the hot seat but did well with the talent he had.

So we're looking at going 8-8 again next year like the Jets did this year as doing well? Sure hope the Dolphins can do better than that.

Rex coached his little black heart out this year for sure.

And the 2013 Panthers. New OC and GM.

Both teams improved this year. I think our situation is more similar to the Panthers. Wishful thinking? Sure. Let me savor the moment.

If this is the route we're going, I just pray that Joe has his Riverboat Ron moment. I think he may have finally had that moment on 4th and 5 against New England.

Just trying to be optimistic, I suppose.

We can't really say that until Ross picks a new GM and tells him to keep Failbin. And judging by the list of candidates I see, none of these guys would agree to that.

The parallels are amazing to think about. Third year QB? Check. Lots of defensive talent that just needs more direction? Check.

Dont forget a QB with promise going into their 3rd year

A lot of people are assuming that Philbin is safe. If Ross is serious about going in another direction, he'll leave Philbin's future up to the man he hires as GM. Now if Ross stays in-house with Gaine, Philbin is safe.
