As Haden posted on another thread, this is a possibility with not knowing who will be coaching. May not be a bad idea but, will change needs to 3 new starters on the DL.

At LB, Jenkins moves inside, Jordan to the OLB with maybe Wake, OV and McCain. We could look at a re-do on Ellerbe, who did well as an ILB with Balt. The secondary needs would be the same.

Starks was VG at 3-4 DE but, don't know what is going on wit him the last few games.

Could happen.
 
in the 3/4, you need a huge NT that can occupy the center and guard and push back. We do not have that right now at all.
 
shouldA BEEN all along...Dion Jordan will flourish in 3-4
 
Switch to a 3-4 and this may become your top target in the draft.

I don't know if you can play Ellerbe and Jenkins together at ILB. Both of them profile more as the second guy in after the "thumper" mlb
 
Well then we'd only need one run plugging tackle, in the 4-3 we'd need 2. Would Starks and Odrick make better 3-4 ends? I seem to remember each of them being able to get 6 or 7 sacks from those spots. Also, seems like we'd have too many OLB's:

Wake, Vernon, Jordan, McCain only 2 can play. Best case Jordan and McCain are better and solidify the positions for years to come but as a Dolphins fan things never work out that way.
 
Also does it matter? The majority of snaps are taken with the defense in the nickel and a decent number of snaps are taken in the "5-2" where Wheeler was off the field and Wake and or Vernon (or sometimes Jordan) was standing.

This would be our biggest need to change over from FA and/or the draft.

Starks "was" VG as a 3-4 DE, Odrick was up and down, and better suited to a 4-4 DT.

IF we do this, Wake or OV could be traded.
 
We've had a hard enough time finding 3 decent LBs the past several years. Not totally against the idea but it would require a complete overhaul. Not sure if Philibin has that kind of time left?
 
Our current personnel isn't even close to what we would need for a 3-4. We are creating more hole by switching.

Who's gonna stop the run??? We have no beef up front. Nah, won't work unless you concentrate the whole draft on defense

been saying this forever. we have the personnel except a nt. I would go as far as saying trade wake. ov and Jordan would be nasty in a 34
