One bullet through the sofa. Another into the refrigerator. Windows broken. Walls torn. More than a dozen bullets hit the small house that day on Mulberry Street, the work of a drive-by shooter sending a message for Davon Godchaux’s twin brother, Devin, who was descending down a path to prison.
Siblings in and out of prison. A mother who underwent scores of stomach surgeries and remains bed-ridden with circulatory problems. His father vacant most of the time. No money. And his twin’s street rivals, months after that home shooting five years ago, cornered Davon to warn, “We’ll kill you.”
The morning after his house was shot up, Godchaux showed up for a 6 a.m. football workout, pushing an industrial tire around the field in a furious manner that made the coaches take video. He became a fixture in the weight room, Difestano said.
As his football career took off, he had other troubles. John Barbee got a phone call from him at 4:30 a.m. in the fall of 2016, Godchaux’s sophomore year. The connection failed, but a minute later Difestano called. Godchaux was in jail, charged with domestic assault.
The police report said he grabbed the mother of his child by the hair and shoulder and, “tossed her backwards.” Charges were dropped because the district attorney said there was inconsistent statements and physical evidence. There still was fall-out from that in the NFL draft when Godchaux came out after his junior year.
