Free agency is still three weeks off, and Lamar Miller apparently can’t wait.

Miller, the Dolphins’ starting running back the last three years, is about to get paid.

The Dolphins want that story to be written in Miami.

“I'm tryna make next year the greatest story ever told. #Dreambig,” Miller wrote on Twitter Monday.

But behind the scenes, the Dolphins are more bullish on Miller, the Miami Herald has learned. One source tells the Herald that the organization “definitely” wants Miller back in 2016.

The sticking point: How much are the Dolphins willing to spend?

Industry insiders estimate Miller will command a contract that pays roughly $5 million a year. That would put him at the top of the second tier of NFL running backs, which seems reasonable, considering he’s got a clean medical history and is one of the league’s most efficient runners.

Miller also said this two days ago, which Beasley didn't mention.

I like Miller at between 4 to 5 million, but not beyond.

has to be at the right price

For comparison sake

Greg Auman is hearing that it will require more than $6-7 million per year for the Buccaneers to sign free agent RB Doug Martin.
If Tampa Bay’s offer ends up being just $5 million annually, Auman expects Martin to test the open market.

The Bucs also have a ton of cash. Will they keep Doug Martin and Vincent Jackson?

Jackson will stay for the final year of his contract. He's a team captain, widely respected in the locker room and critical to the continued development of Mike Evans. Martin will cash in elsewhere as a free agent. It's not easy to get paid as a free-agent running back anymore, but Martin offers the best combination of age, skill set and versatility to command good coin. -- Field Yates

Got to have faith in that there are other RB's that can be productive that will be available and the idea that Ajayi can take the next step.

If doug martin is getting 6 or 7 mil on the market no reason lamar miller cant and hes got a cleaner pro bill of health to date

At 5 mil i get why youd bring him back...but i wouldnt at 7

If he does leave and we dont fill in free agency i already know who i want to replace him with in the draft...but i will leave it for the right time

$5M and 5 years is what many of us have been talking about for some time, and he is worth it for run, receive, and block. With a $5M signing bonus, he could easily cast $2M on this year's cap, which is nothing.

My favorite RB relative to his projected RD is Kenneth Dixon.

If Martin can get almost to 7 doubt were getting Miller back at 5, someone will pay more.

The top couple players at each position will garner big money with all this cap space some teams have.

Based on a conservative $150M cap estimate, 5 #NFL teams have more than $50M in cap space. Crazy spring ahead. (JAX, OAK, NYG, SF, CHI).

Unless he gives us a discount...which would seem would only be the case if gase promised him certain number of touches a game...which i doubt gase will do

I agree though would seem he could do better on the market

The sticking point will clearly be Miller's potential price tag, especially in an offseason where the team also desperately needs to keep dominating offensive lineman Olivier Vernon. Miller will not turn 25 years old until April and is arguably the highest-upside running back available on the free agent market in 2016. Explosive and young with a 4.6 yards-per-carry average, Miller also has a lot of tread left on the tires given the Dolphins' often-inexplicably erratic usage of him. He has only 638 career rushing attempts and often seemed to be the forgotten man in the offense of former head coach Joe Philbin.

The Dolphins also have a good insurance policy in RB Jay Ajayi should Miller walk. Miami is in the process of clearing some serious cap space but, with Miller likely to garner offers upward of $5 million per year, the team's braintrust may come to the conclusion that Miller is a luxury they cannot afford with so many other needs to fill.

I'd pay him $7 mil per if that's what it takes. Unless Gase doesn't plan to use him any more than the previous staff you are getting great productivity for the dollar even at that price. It's passe to say he's just a RB, and they are easily replaceable, but he works hard, is relatively young, has been very productive, and has been healthy in the pros. Not as easy to replace as touted.
