Dolphins | Eckel reportedly booted out of the Navy
Fri, 17 Nov 2006 19:15:29 -0800
Armando Salguero, of The Miami Herald, reports Miami Dolphins FB Kyle Eckel was kicked out of the Navy for an undisclosed reason, according to The Navy Times. Initial reports indicated Eckel received an early discharge so he could play in the NFL. As a result of being dismissed, Eckel now owes the Navy $96,229.56 for not fulfilling his service commitment. The report also claimed Eckel faces two assault charges and a sex-offense charge in Anne Arundel County District Court for an August incident, according to District Court of Maryland records. The charges were dropped and no reason was given for their dismissal.

Usually when someone gets discharged it is because of a sexual offense

glad we have the guy on the team...NOT!

But i'm sure we only have part of the story.

Or a drug charge. :goof:

I'm cool with assult charges. I like to see that in players... especially guys who play a position where their main job is to have to hit people hard.... ala LB(Ray Lewis, Crowder), FB, DE(Roth), SS(Sean Taylor).

That is posssibly the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen posted here. Being an unstable, violent person off the field doesn't mean you're going to be a great player on the field (Lawrence Phillips anyone???).

well eckel's commitment to the navy was for 6 years and to combine that with an nfl career is not really doable. so maybe he figured it'll cost him $97,000 to get kicked out but if he can make the NFL minimum of $275,000 for 5 years he's still ahead of the game. If none of this makes sense, he can bunk with Marcus Vick.

"Funny you should say that. He actually only spent about 6 months on the ship. He got to the USS Kearsarge (not the Normandy as reported). He got there around Jan 2006. Then he left the boat around June or July heading the Transient Personnel unit in Norfolk, va for medical reasons. That was his way out. Medical. He is in great shape. His total time on active duty was staying prepared for the NFL. The guy reminds me of Zach Thomas. I know one play defense and the other offense...but im talking about work ethics an dthe fact that he has no neck. Another RB from Navy Eric Roberts speaks very very highly of Ensign Eckels. I just have one problem with the way he got out. He compromised his integrity a little bit. In the military you are called to perform a duty, in my humble opinion that duty is more important than professional football. He saw otherwise. Im not mad at him, but he wasn't worthy of the DD214 he recieved."

I posted the above statement about 2 weeks ago. He is not gay, he didnt smoke weed and he wasn't discharged for the assault charges. He was discharged for a "condition not a disability" he was complaining of some medical issues that he actually had minor surguries for. After a period on Limited duty he was complaining that it wasn't any better. They will involuntarily separate you for that. I have personal knowledge of his situation. And to the guy that said "navy is gay" Im Navy and I have 7 kids. Im far from gay.

so basically what I said is true. as a 24 year old potential rb/fb, eckel was lying around norfolk virginia swabbing the decks saying: "what have I gotten myself into? I've got a 6 year commitment and that means I can pursue my dream of playing in the nfl when I'm 30? not many guys possess the potential to play in the nfl and he believes he can so he's taking a risk: 275k - 97k = 178k. It saddens me that he reneged on his military commitment but I think he's been appropriately punished and I think the navy can backfill his position.
