As the NFL Draft approaches, the Dolphins have two clear-cut starting linebackers (Jelani Jenkins and Koa Misi) but serious questions about the third starter: Spencer Paysinger, Chris McCain and Kelvin Sheppard are all candidates.
The Dolphins might find a long-term starting linebacker in the second round --- DenzelPerryman said the Dolphins told him they like him --- but NFL Network’s Mike Mayocksaid there’s no pure linebacker worthy of taking with Miami’s first-round pick at 14.
“I don’t see an inside linebacker in the first round,” said Mayock, who believes a receiver or cornerback makes the most sense for the Dolphins at 14.
But several linebackers would warrant consideration with Miami’s second round pick (47th overall), if they’re available: UCLA’s Eric Kendricks, Mississippi State’s Benardrick McKinney, TCU’s Paul Dawson, Clemson’s Stephon Anthony and Perryman. The Dolphins don’t have a third-round pick but have explored trading for one.
The Dolphins dispatched linebackers coach Mark Duffner to spend private time with Anthony, who was Clemson’s leading tackler the past two years.
“NFL teams in the market for an intense, physical run-stuffing inside linebacker would be wise to keep an eye on Anthony,” said CBSSports.com draft analysts Dane Bruglerand Rob Rang, who rate him 47th among all prospects.
They say his “production, compact frame and aggression are impressive” but he “does not possess ideal speed to beat backs to the sideline or the agility preferred in coverage, traits required of middle linebackers in a standard 4-3 alignment.”
Perryman, who could drop into the third round because of concerns about his size (5-11) and lack of high-end speed, said: “I’ve been getting a great feeling with the Dolphins” and that Duffner said he hopes Miami drafts him. “He said it would be great if they land me and he’s not saying it just to say it,” Perryman said.

yes he is not a jet like Misi:bobdole: has anyone watched extensive tape on Anthony?, cuz we all know Zach Thomas was too small and slow

Kendricks
McKinney
Perryman

Those are my favorite options, in order. God I hope we do something and don't think some 5th rounder will solve the issue

The mike linebacker role is one of the most obvious holes on the team and needs to be addressed. I would actually prefer drafting the player they want a little early (like the 2nd round) rather than hope that he lands in our lap in the 4th. Stephon Anthony's name repeatedly keeps surfacing in connection to the Dolphins. This article infers that his agility isn't great but other articles are glowing about his athleticism, so I welcome comments from those who are more familiar with watching his play. He's definitely high character and was a natural leader at Clemson and these are qualities that we will like a lot.
Interesting to note that they didn't mention Jordie Tripp above, so it sounds like they just see him as Jelani Jenkins' backup and for Special Teams and he's not in the mix for the mike role.

Kendricks still not getting enough love.

How Mayock has Dawson ahead of him is beyond me.

After last season ended, I was screaming for LB upgrades. Please make it be so!

There's gotta be a MLB solution in the 2nd round.

and let me just say this on Kendricks, there is a lot to like about him, but he's also got a lot to work on.He does a great job adjusting to plays, and recovering when blocked. But there are a lot of instances where he's not challenged due to the talent of the UCLA defense. I also feel that he hasn't displayed the same ability in other areas that other LB prospects had for the MIKE position that we seem to be looking at.

:bobdole:

this ****ing board...i tell ya

even got draft analysts calling kendricks a will which would take away all that inside read and diag and terrific drop zone coverage in the middle of the field work

Not a lot of good choices. Not the year to be wanting a real MLB. I don't want us to reach. No LB worth taking at 14. It's looking more and more that if we stay at 14 the pick would be either WR, corner or guard

Ozzy rules!!
