With these reports that our GM position is coveted by seasoned GM candidates across the league, there is absolutely no reason to settle for Champ Kelly, unless it’s about money which I doubt since Ross has had pretty much an open checkbook as owner. The only possible other thing imo would be that he wants to keep McDaniel for another year, so keeping Champ would assure that, because a new guy coming in would most likely want to choose his own coach. So for that reason I hope we lose the rest of the season, McD is in over his head as head coach. I do think he’s a great play designer and it seems that his playcalling has improved so he should definitely go back to being an offensive coordinator, and judging by the reports he’ll have plenty of options. Maybe he can accomplish more with better players because Grier has hamstrung him with this top heavy disaster of a roster, but his situational play calling, time management, lack of control/respect in the locker room (and he hasn’t installed a hurry up offense in 4 freaking years to change the tempo) haven’t got much better since his rookie year and he’s not improving enough for me to want to give him another season, even though I think he’ll be here next year despite all that.
I’ll admit Champ Kelly does have a good story about his life and his childhood, and he says all the right things in interviews, but at the end of the day track record trumps all and his time as assistant GM on the Raiders and Bears definitely makes me wary as I was not impressed at all. His best draft pick imo was Brock Bowers, so I think he might’ve taken Tyler Warren instead of Grant if he was the GM this past draft, but his overall body of work does not show me that he’s worthy of being promoted to full time GM.
I wouldn’t be opposed to keeping him around in a senior personnel executive /assistant GM role, but as far as full time GM I think we should be looking at some of the names that have been talked about lately like Alec Halaby, Jon-Eric Sullivan and Andy Weidl. I’m on the side of cleaning house completely, I want to fire everyone in the scouting department and start fresh with a guy from a great franchise that has a track record for success and let that guy bring in all the scouts and coaches that he wants, but I think we are all going to end up disappointed because we will have a late season surge and win some meaningless games to get back into the playoff picture, only to have our annual crap the bed game late in the season . I think it’s going to require 10 wins to get the 7th seed, Chargers are at 6th at 7-3 and the Chiefs are 5-4 as the 7th seed currently, and I can’t see a scenario where the Chiefs don’t make the playoffs. Unfortunately I think we win a few in a row, only to get assblasted back to reality in the snow at New England, who will expose us as the pretenders we are and solidify that Tua can’t play when it’s windy and cold. However, knowing Ross, he will ignore that and focus on the 2nd half improvement the team made and the circle of sucking will continue yet again with no major changes.
IMO we should all hope we end the season on a sour note and lose some of these winnable games so Ross doesn’t get excited over meaningless wins and want to keep the status quo. Alot of us said he would fire Grier to appease the fans, but that’s not enough we need to completely revamp the front office as they have consistently shown they cannot build a contender, and it starts with not drafting the right guys over and over. If you guys remember the article I posted a while back from Barry Jackson, the numbers were shocking, think it was 1 out of 43 draft picks that are on the team now that have been good players that we resigned to a 2nd contract since 2020 or 2021. And that one player was Waddle, who we had to trade up for and cost ourselves a first round pick and we passed on so many future All-pros to draft a guy that hasn’t even made the Pro Bowl. I do like Waddle but there were much better players we passed on to draft him, not to mention the draft capital we had to use to get him.
Really hope I’m wrong and we end up hiring a guy from outside the franchise, and it seems like we will have our pick of the litter. Please Ross, please do not settle, this fanbase deserves a true contender and I just don’t think Champ Kelly is the guy to accomplish that feat.
Judging by how he’s acted since he took over as interim GM leads me to believe the decision has already been made to keep Kelly, he’s not acting like a guy who’s just an interim GM. Like ChadRico said, I’m starting to grow apathetic with this organization and keeping Kelly around will only make it worse. Sigh, why can’t we have nice things?
