Free agency, beginning Feb. 27, will determine the priorities. The Dolphins choose 25th overall on April 25. They have two second-round picks (one of them courtesy of the Jason Taylor trade to the Washington Redskins), and General Manager Jeff Ireland has said he would like to acquire a third second-rounder.
If it’s a normal draft, and Carey is gone through free agency, a big right tackle or a center will be available. The pick for me, presuming he’s available: Alex Mack of Cal. He was one of the few linemen at the Senior Bowl who held his own against Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji, a likely Top 10 pick. Mack is big, strong and gives the Dolphins the ability to move Samson Satele to guard. Many people like Oregon’s Max Unger, but I believe you’ll see at the NFL Combine beginning next Wednesday that there is a difference in strength between Mack and Unger. If Al Johnson is healthy and chooses to stay with the Dolphins, it frees this pick to be a tackle or a guard.
By the time the Dolphins select in Round 2, using that Redskins pick, it’ll be time to decide between a lineman and either cornerback or wide receiver. I expect a lineman here if a linebacker is the first selection. Perhaps someone like Wisconsin’s Kraig Urbik, a guard as big as your front door who also has played tackle might work his way to here.
