The article also talks about how the team has not talked at all with Vernon Carey about a contract extension and that he will draw a lot of attention in free agency.

With unrestricted free agency looming for linebacker Channing Crowder and right tackle Vernon Carey, both are receiving positive feedback. The Dolphins recently had preliminary talks with Crowder's agent about a new contract, but the sides aren't close on money.

Carey, meanwhile, said Bill Parcells assured him in recent days that he's ''doing a good job.'' He thought the Dolphins would have broached a new contract by now, but understands the team wanting to ``feel you out the whole year.''

If I had to choose one of the two to keep, it would no doubt be Vernon Carey. I really hope they don't let him test free agency. If they don't sign him long term, they need to at least franchise him. You have to keep this young offensive line together. I would hate to have to start over again with a new right tackle.

As for Crowder, I hope he does get an extension. He is far from elite and I have been disappointed with him from time to time, but I do think he is a good player that still has a lot of potential to become one of the best. He left college early and maybe was a little immature and raw, but he seems to be developing better. I would like to see him stay for awhile.

Carey has been average at best this year. When there have been pass protection breakdowns, they've most often been over Vernon. I think the team wants to see if he'll get better in the second half and then make a decision whether they can upgrade through free agency or the draft before investing $7 mil a year to re-sign him.

I dont see what the big deal is. This regime just got here, everyone has a clean slate. Evaluate the guys for 16 games, and make a decision then. Theres plenty of time in January and February to get deals done.

Crowder has been average and Vernon has been decent. Neither is having their best year IMO.

sign carey for top level right tackle money and let crowder walk. crey won't sign for less and he will get paid very well if he hits free agency plus we'll have to use either a valuable draft pick or valuable cap money for a replacement.crowder takes too many bad angles to the ball carrier in the run game overpursues and most importantly for an 3-4 ilb lack instincts.

if he's willing to sign on the cheap bring him back obviously but otherwise let him go to free agency.

I thought it was important to sign Carey, but, I'm thinking more and more less so..IF the guy wants to leave, let him. I'd offer top 5 RT money to keep him, but, if somone wants to pay him top dollar? Get on goin. I'd not be adverse to signing Crowder for average or slightly above average money.

carye is gonna want to be paid like the top rt in the league and my guess in free agency if he hits there he will. i think he's worth it long term to lock him up b4 free agency personally.

crowder is young and that's the only thing i think he has going for him but you can't teach instincts and he just plain lacks them. no feel for the play b4 hand like zach did. a lot of what we give up in the run game this year is due to bad angles and overpursuing by crowder and ayodele they both lack instincts.

Crowder will be a lot cheaper, and he's a good player to have that you can fit into a couple of different spots. He's smart, and he's a leader. I would do the exact same thing they are doing, which is feel Crowder out on an extension before you do the same with Carey. Carey's extension doesn't need to get done. At the very least they'll have the franchise tag available to them and they can play another year's worth of waiting game. There's nothing wrong with waiting to see how the market shapes up on Carey, unless he's offering a significant early bird discount which I tend to doubt.

I love Carey, but I think we will go after Jordan Gross in the offseason.

I am not real sure Carey is looking to leave. In fact, I think he will give Miami every chance to lock him up long term. Sure he wants to get paid big, what NFL player doesn't, but he was born in Miami, played for the Hurricanes and now plays for the Dolphins. Why would he want to now get up and move to say somewhere like Kansas City when he could sign a long term contract here and continue to live in the place he has been his whole life?

The offensive line is very important for an offense. I would love to have five guys that you can continue to have every season. After this season, Jake Long will still have four years left, Justin Smiley will have four years left, Samson Satele will have two years left and Donald Thomas(if he can come back healthy and reclaim his job) will still have three years left. If you sign Vernon Carey to say a new 5 year deal, you have the potential to have great stability along the line. That will only make them better, which in return will greatly boost the running and passing game.

With salary cap room being through the roof and teams having a ton of room under it, you are likely going to have to shell out big bucks for free agents. If we re-sign Vernon Carey we will no doubt over pay. However, it is just how the market works, so I don't really see anything wrong with overpaying a bit to keep him in the fold.

Well Parcells certainly sees something more in both of them (ayodele and crowder) than you do, i know that for sure. Ayodele has been Parcells MLB for several years now.

As for carey, if he makes it to FA, some team will overpay him to move back to LT.

my question is if crowder does leave where doe the long term upgrade come from??? in the draft both rey rey and laurinitus imo lack instincts and i think that is critical at ilb.

so where do we get it... free agency and if so who???

Gross is going to demand a contact in the same range as Carey, or even possibly more. That of course is if the Panthers don't re-sign him long term or slap the franchise tag on him again. I just don't think you can let Carey walk(with no long term talks or a franchise tag). You have to keep the good players.

Both of them will make spectacular pros. Just cause they don't make every play in college or even change every game, doesn't mean they won't be great.

ayodele is an easy one parcells sees a short gap solution at ilb but from what i've seen ayodele at this stage is best suited as a backup ilb.

crowder has upside i agree but i just don't think after 4 years in the league and pretty much starting the entire way you can teach a guy instincts and you can tell on tape crowder while his motor runs non stop lacks them.
