According to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports, new Dolphins safety Michael Thomas nearly missed his chance to intercept Tom Brady in the fourth quarter because it took him too long to check his messages.
The Dolphins were ready to sign him off the 49ers practice squad, but needed to know he was coming. His agent called and texted. The messages sat there, unanswered on Monday morning.
Another 30 minutes and they might have moved on, but Thomas finally got in touch and got on a plane.
“I’m glad my sister was there. We hurried up and threw stuff in the bag,” Thomas said. “I made the difficult call to [49ers coach Jim] Harbaugh and [General Manager] Trent Baalke, talked to [defensive coordinator] Vic Fangio and [secondary coach] Ed Donatell, but it was something I had to do. I had to take a chance on myself to prove I can play instead of just staying on the practice squad.”
He did just that, breaking up a pass on first down and picking off Tom Brady on fourth down, showing that getting some reception late is better than not at all.

Ireland has been spot on with McKinnie and this kid. saved our season

thanks for finding that, Interesting!

Someone needs to find this sister and send her a pie or something!

Where does this kid fit into our lineup? Isn't he a safety?

He said he was a safety in college but played the slot in his freshman year and thats about all the CB experience he has. Apparently he is versatile enough to plug n anywhere. I always wondered why teams to pay closer attention to the practice squads of more successful trams

Whoever the Pro Personnel Scout is for the Dolphins deserves the bulk of the credit for finding this kid. Showed some terrific ball skills not only on the pick but on the pass break up in the end zone before that.

It's so refreshing to hear his comments after the game. He was asked about the play where he knocked the ball out of Amendola's hands 2 plays earlier and he said that he didn't want to go for the int and miss so he played through the receiver to make sure they didn't get the td. Then he adds that it's not about him, team comes first.

I think I heard that Marlon Moore turned them on to him. He spent the first half of the season with the 49ers so he had some experience playing against him. He probably also had some insight as to how much the coaching staff there liked him.

I think the pass break up was terrific. One of the best plays a Dolphins CB has done in a long time. His INT was great but that pass break up...sweet. It was a sure touchdown and he got his hand in there in the right moment. Not to early, not to late. If you ever want to teach a secondary player the game that should be one of the video highlights.

Coyle is the man for finding talented DBs and making them better than they are. This kid could be something special if he flashes that potential.

Can you just imagine how he feels? Practice squad one week and the next you are winning the game by picking off a future hall of famer? Wow.

If the coach who knew him best from college and the pros thought so highly of him that they offered him more money to stay on the PS short-term ostensibly with an eye towards having him in their future plans, he just might be one of those proverbial acorns who transforms into a mighty Fins oak.

Dang.....can this story get any better...

Then again a season can be determind by one game, one drive, one penalty, one score, one point, one second, or one practice squad player being brought up.

it's amazing that our weakest position on the field, was able to win the game for us vs. a HOF QB.

I have been meaning to ask about "poaching" players from other teams practice squads.

Does every team have the ability to pick up a player this way any time they want to?
What are the rules that allowed us to get Thomas from San Fran?
